๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Do you believe the Madison will ever reopen?
๐ŸŽญ THE MADISON THEATER IS BACK IN THE NEWSโ€ฆ KIND OF.

A developer is proposing a roughly $7.3โ€“$8 million redevelopment of the 500 block of Main Street, including new restaurants, an expanded Hoops Pub & Pizza, boutique hotel rooms, renovated commercial space and additional parking.

That would be real investment in a long-neglected stretch of downtown Peoria.

But it is important to make one thing clear:

This is not currently a $35 million plan to restore and reopen the Madison Theater itself.

Since the Madison closed in 2003, efforts to bring it back have arrived in waves. New groups form. Plans are announced. The media gets invited inside. There are public tours, fundraisers, architectural studies and hopeful reopening timelines.

Then every effort eventually reaches the same very expensive reality.

Restoration estimates have grown from roughly $18 million in 2013 to more than $30โ€“$35 million in recent years. Reopening the Madison would require much more than fresh paint and a repaired marquee. It would mean extensive structural, electrical, mechanical, fire-safety and historic-preservation work throughout the building.

That does not mean the current proposal is unimportant.

New restaurants, hotel rooms and active storefronts could bring more people, money and attention to the Madisonโ€™s block. A healthier surrounding development may even improve the theaterโ€™s chances someday.

For now, though, the Madison remains what it has been for more than two decades:

A remarkable piece of Peoria history, a building people desperately want to saveโ€”and a dream still searching for tens of millions of dollars.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Do you believe the Madison will ever reopen?

๐Ÿ“ผ This was Blockbuster Video in 1998.

People lined up at midnight to buy *Titanic* on VHS. A decade later, Blockbuster stores were disappearing across the countryโ€”including Peoriaโ€™s Campustown location, which closed in 2009.

At its peak, the Peoriaโ€“Bloomington/Normal area appears to have had at least five Blockbuster stores:

๐Ÿ“ Two in Peoria
๐Ÿ“ One in East Peoria
๐Ÿ“ One in Bloomington
๐Ÿ“ One in Normal

Are we missing any?

And hereโ€™s the real nostalgia test:

๐ŸŽฌ Do you remember the last movie you rented before the video stores disappeared?

๐Ÿฅพ Whatโ€™s your favorite trail, walk, or hike in Central Illinois?
We thought we would share some of our favorites with you in our new series, 60-Second Strolls.

Our first stop is Lakewood Park in Morton.

The level trail circles the pond, covers about 0.6 miles, and is an easy little walk when you want to get outside without committing half your day.

This stroll only took us less than 60 seconds to show youโ€”but now we need ideas for the next one.

๐ŸŒณ What trail, park, neighborhood, or hidden walking spot should we explore next?

๐ŸŽฌ Be honestโ€ฆ how many of these 22 do you recognize?
Illinois Comic Con has announced its 2026 guest lineup, and we turned it into a little pop-culture quiz.

Study the photo, count the ones you recognize, and post your score in the comments. >> Weโ€™re grading on a curveโ€”recognize the voice or character but not the person's name? Go ahead and count it. Close enough.

๐Ÿš—๐Ÿฝ๏ธ What Central Illinois restaurant is absolutely worth a 45-minute drive?

Not just โ€œpretty good.โ€ Weโ€™re talking about the kind of place you would gladly pass 20 other restaurants to get to.

Maybe itโ€™s a tiny small-town diner, an amazing pizza place, a hidden Mexican restaurant, a legendary tenderloin, or one specific dish you canโ€™t get anywhere else. ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿ‘‡ Name the restaurant, the town, and what we should order when we get there.

Bonus points if itโ€™s somewhere most people around Peoria havenโ€™t discovered yet!

Weโ€™ll use your recommendations to build a Channel 309 list of Central Illinois restaurants worth the drive. ๐Ÿš˜๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿš— What did East Peoria look like from the driverโ€™s seat in 1963?
This old 8mm home movie takes us on an ordinary drive through a town that looks very different today.

We cross the Murray Baker Bridge (opened 1958) into East Peoria, pass CILCOโ€™s R.S. Wallace Station, travel beneath the Fondulac Drive Bridge (also opened 1958), take the exit into town and get a great look at the old Holiday Innโ€”including that unforgettable roadside sign. ๐Ÿจ

Then itโ€™s straight through the industrial heart of East Peoria, with block after block of Caterpillar buildings, equipment and activity along the way. ๐Ÿšœ

๐Ÿ‘€ What buildings or landmarks do you recognize?
๐Ÿญ Can anyone identify all the Caterpillar buildings we pass?
๐Ÿ’ญ And who remembers that Holiday Inn?

๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿšข Imagine standing on the Peoria riverfront in 1907 and hearing music blasting across the water before the boat even came into view.

That sound came from the Steamer J.S.โ€”a massive floating party palace with a ballroom, live bandstand, ice-cream bar and a steam calliope reportedly loud enough to be heard for miles. ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ•บ

For a few years, it was a floating palace filled with music, dancing and thousands of electric lights.

Then, in 1910, a prisoner being held aboard reportedly started a fire. The J.S. burned to the waterline with more than 1,100 people on board. Most escaped, but one passenger drowned.

Imagine standing on the Peoria riverfront and hearing that calliope echo across the water.

Would you have taken a ride aboard the J.S.? ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ PEORIA SENDS ITS TROOPS OFF TO WAR ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

These remarkable images capture a World War I-era troop sendoff in downtown Peoria, circa 1917.

Local soldiers were escorted through the streets toward the depot as families, friends, neighbors, and members of the community walked beside them. Flags filled the street. Crowds gathered along the sidewalks. For some families, this would be their final goodbye. ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ๐Ÿ’”

We carefully animated the original photographs to bring these moments back to life more than a century later. ๐ŸŽž๏ธ

Look closely at the buildings, bicycles, clothing, parasols, early automobiles, and the faces in the crowd.
