We had a great weekend at Ray Behrens COE park in Perry, MO. This was site 6A and it was FHU. The weather was better than expected. We went hiking, geocaching, drove around the Clarence Cannon Dam, and had some ice cream at the nearby marina. I put descriptions on most of the photos. 📌Sodalis Nature Preserve - aka The bat park
🌳 Sunday Hike 🦇
💥 Missouri is the state with the second most caves in the US (next to TN).

There are many caves in Sodalis Nature Reserve. All of these caves are blocked off with gates but if you want to explore, The Mark Twain Cave gives guided tours and is nearby and is really interesting, especially if you are a fan of his books. Cameron Cave is more primative but is on the same grounds as Mark Twain Cave and can also be explored as well.

Sodalis is one of my favorite places to hike in the Hannibal, MO area. We have had a ton of rain this week, making all my wooded trails a little too muddy to hike. Today I decided to head out and do some paved trails. We entered the Bear Creek Trail near the Mississippi River. It meanders along the Bear Creek which continues throughout the Sodalis Trail. Pirates Ridge is a great wooded trail in dryer conditions

More than 222,000 federally endangered Indiana bats hibernate in a former limestone mine that closed a half-century ago and in the cave network nearby. The bats that hibernate in Hannibal make up about one-third of all known Indiana bats (their scientific name is Myotis sodalis, hence the preserve name.)

If you get a chance to do ome of their Night Hikes, I highly recommend it. There is no charge.

We had another great camping trip to Mark Twain State Park last weekend. I just love that area around Mark Twain Lake! Fun fact: Mark Twain’s birthplace and home is inside the visitors center and museum here .

We stopped by the Florida, MO Winery for some live music and food. Many walks, drinks and laughs were had!! It’s also my favorite hiking spot in my home base area.

📍Mina Sauk Falls, located in Taum Sauk State Park on Taum Sauk Mountain. We did the 3 mile hike that passes by the waterfall. You do have to scramble down to get near the bottom of the falls but it was doable.

📌 Mina Sauk is the tallest waterfall in Missouri, cascading down 132 ft

📌 The tallest point in MO is marked near the Mina Sauk Falls trailhead.

📌 Taum Sauk Mountain and the surrounding k***s are are among the few areas in the US that were volcanic rocks in the Paleozoic Era. That is why the rock behind the falls is black.

📌 Mina Sauk Falls Trail merges with a section of the Ozark National Trail

📌 The geologic history of Taum Sauk Mountain State Park and the St. Francois Mountains began almost 1.5 billion years ago. A series of volcanic eruptions spewed dust, ash and hot gases into the sky. Fine-grained rhyolite formed at the surface, while coarse-grained granite formed below.

📌 Make sure to also visit Johnson Shut-Ins and Elephant Rocks state parks while in the area. They are all very close together, and are absolutely unique and fun. The last few photos are of Elephant Rocks and Johnson Shut Ins.
