An Ode to Dear Ol’ Perry High - by Kayla Johnson

For the students who just graduated from Perry High School, the past four years were probably filled with moments that did not seem important at the time. Early mornings and the occasional donut run with friends before class, conversations in crowded hallways, long bus rides home after games when everyone’s falling asleep, familiar teachers, and seeing the same faces every day slowly became part of ordinary life. Now, with graduation behind them, many of those ordinary moments suddenly feel different.

Perry is the kind of place where students grow up together rather than simply attend school together. Most graduates have known each other for years, even since kindergarten. Over time, classmates become tied to memories far beyond the classroom itself: school events, community traditions, shared successes, difficult moments, and the routines of growing up in a small town where people tend to know one another well across generations. Students at the high school campus often walk the same halls that older siblings, cousins, or even their parents walked through, while others are first generation Perryans.

My Nana was perfect - Volume 6

Gloria Dean was born in Pueblo, Colorado, to Ted and Coreta Ard on January 12, 1935. She grew up in Lime, CO, a small steel mill community southeast of Pueblo. She later worked at the telephone company, and that’s when she met my papa, Ed Englebrecht.

Back then, he went by Eddie. He was attending the Junior College, and there was to be a bonfire for the college football game one evening. My nana’s friend Lynn had a crush on a guy named Corky, and Lynn knew Corky and his friend Eddie Englebrecht would be at the bonfire. She begged my nana to go with her. My nana really had no interest in going, and she only went to support her friend. Let’s just say my papa was the stud of the town and all the girls were in love with Eddie Englebrecht, that’s according to how my nana told the story.

The Philbrook is a magical place.

A few students couldn’t make it so we made a video for them.

Thank you Dr. Bell for being our tour guide.

Well…… We, I, had a misspelling, like usual, which caused me to go back and correct it, which put us farther down on the printing list. Print is tomorrow and distribution will be Friday!

This front cover photo is quite telling of the world I am creating at the Sunflower Perry Press. I've taken a microphone stand and in the place of the microphone I've attached a large silk sunflower.

Sorry for the delay! 🦋🦋🦋

Happy Wednesday Perry!🍎🌻✏️

According to Random House Roget’s Thesaurus:

Predestination - noun - fate, fortune, kismet, destiny, providence, what must be, God’s will, inevitability, force of circumstances; preordination, predetermination. --Antonym - accident, chance.

Perry, we were predestined to be in this miraculous world and cute little town together. You are living it up one moment at a time, making history, and I get to write about it.

What a wonderful town we live in!
