He’s so tall, we could barely fit in the photo together with me on my tippy toes! 😆

ANNOUNCING a New Scholarship Fund!
We are proud to introduce the FRANK C. OATHOUDT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP, honoring the life and legacy of Frank C. Oathoudt — a Vietnam veteran, newspaper journalist, and editor.

Beginning in Fall 2026, this scholarship will award $3,000 annually to students pursuing careers in journalism and/or communications.

The scholarship was created by Pam Helfers Riss of Streator in loving memory of her late brother-in-law, Frank. Frank served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam (October 1970–October 1971) and dedicated his professional life to storytelling and truth through journalism. He passed away at age 74 on January 8, 2024, in Greensboro, North Carolina, just weeks after the passing of his wife, Mary Jo (Helfers) Oathoudt, in December 2023.

Learn more about Frank’s remarkable story and this lasting tribute:
