This week The Rabbit Hole started with a breakdown of Van Halen's third album, Women and Children First, released on March 26, 1980. Produced by Ted Templeman, it marks a pivotal moment in the band's discography where they actively shifted away from the polished, radio-friendly pop-rock elements of Van Halen II to embrace a much darker, heavier, and more aggressive sound. It is also historically significant as the very first Van Halen album to consist entirely of original compositions, featuring zero cover songs. What caught my attention was the fact that the lead single, "And the Cradle Will Rock," features Eddie playing a Wurlitzer electric piano that he famously ran it through his signature Marshall amplifier and a MXR Flanger effects pedal to make it sound exactly like a dirty, crunchy guitar rhythm. So following the three great songs from VH, this playlist features songs with the Wurlitzer electric piano. I also threw in songs that feature other electric pianos.

This week the Rabbit hole focused on four albums that I found in the used section at Watts Music in Novato: Jethro Tull's Song from the Wood, Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle, Rush's self-titled debut, and the Style Council's My Ever Changing Moods, which is the US version of Cafe Bleu. It is certainly a diverse playlist, English-folk inspired rock, robotic post punk/new wave, Zeppelin-inspired bluesy heavy rock, and sophisti-pop.

Cincinnati, Ohio’s Afghan Whigs were the first non-Pacific Northwest artist signed by Sub Pop label. After signing in 1989, they released their label debut, Up in It a year later. Unlike their labelmates Nirvana and Soundgarden, who were more guitar-driven, The Whigs relied on an organic formula of rock and soul. The vocals of frontman Greg Dulli are captivating. I was hooked when I heard the hit single, Debonair from their 1993 release, Gentlemen. Then you back his vocals with smart rock and soul influenced instrumentation, you have a timeless sound. The original lineup of Dulli, guitarist Rick McCollum, bassist John Curley, and drummer Steve Earle stayed together until 1995. Drummer Steve Earle was asked to leave following the touring for Gentlemen and before going into the studio for the recording of 1996’s Black Love. Earle was replaced by Paul Buchinagni. Today, original members Dulli and Curley are joined by multi-instrumentalist Rick G. Nelson, guitarist Christopher Thorn, and drummer Bryan Lee Brown joins them on tour. The Whigs recently released two new singles, Duvateen and House of I, and they are in the midst of their 40th anniversary tour. They are performing at the Fillmore in SF on Tuesday, May 19.

Something made me think of the band Sparta last week so I decided to start this week's Rabbit Hole with the song that introduced me to the band that resulted from the break up of At the Drive-In. It's a journey through the aughts.

Finishing up the journey that started three weeks ago. This week's journey started with Boston's "Feelin' Satisfied" from their sophomore effort. Fans waited two years for the release, but Tom Sholz still felt rushed by the record label. Don't Look Back was released in 1978, so The Rabbit Hole lingers around '78 covering pop rock, classic rock, hard rock, and a touch of heavy metal.
