While only two Lady Vikings were named to the state all-tournament team in Charleston, the sting of that was somewhat alleviated this week when three Petersburg standouts were recognized with First Team Class AA All-State honors from the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. They also received one second team honor and one honorable mention. Miley Tingler was named the captain of the first team.

A championship season now comes with major statewide recognition.

Five Petersburg Lady Vikings have been named to the Class AA All-State Softball Team, led by junior Miley Tingler, who earned First Team honors and was named First Team captain.

Tingler was joined on the First Team by senior catcher Ella Chew and junior infielder Shyane Tawney. Sophomore infielder Ella Markwell earned Second Team honors, while Gracie Carpenter received Honorable Mention.

The recognition follows Petersburg’s historic Class AA state championship run, which brought the program its first softball title.

Tingler, who was named the Class AA State Tournament MVP, earned First Team captain honors after one of the strongest offensive seasons in Class AA. The junior finished with 54 hits, 12 home runs, 48 RBIs and 69 runs scored, while batting .574 and reaching base in more than two-thirds of her plate appearances. In Charleston, she delivered several of Petersburg’s biggest moments, including a home run and four RBIs against Sissonville, a go-ahead home run against Logan and a 3-for-4 performance in the championship game.

Chew closed her Petersburg career with First Team honors after a strong senior season at the plate and behind the plate. She finished with 45 hits, 15 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 49 RBIs, while batting .450. Defensively, she committed just one error all season. Her biggest moment came in the state tournament opener against Lincoln, when she drove in eight runs with four hits, three doubles and a home run to help Petersburg win 14-12.

Tawney added another First Team selection for Petersburg after a strong all-around season in the infield. Tawney was a steady presence at the plate all season, finishing with 47 hits and a .439 batting average. She also recorded 77 assists defensively. Tawney had hits in all four state tournament games.

Markwell earned Second Team honors as a sophomore after finishing with 47 hits, 14 doubles, six home runs and 49 RBIs. Defensively, Markwell was nearly flawless, out of 212 defensive plays she was involved in, she made the play cleanly 210 times and had only two errors all season. She also drove in eight runs during the state tournament.

Carpenter rounded out Petersburg’s All-State recognition with Honorable Mention after playing a key role in the championship run, including a complete-game win over Sissonville in Charleston.

The honors cap a season that saw Petersburg climb to the top of Class AA.

Michael Eugene Moates, 65, entered a plea to one count of wanton endangerment involving a firearm, with the remaining charges set to be dismissed as part of the agreement.

In court, Moates spoke under oath about the incident, while the judge questioned him before accepting the plea.

A related civil case with the victim remains pending.

Chew selected for WV Regional Senior All-Star Softball Classic

Petersburg’s Ella Chew has been selected to compete in the West Virginia Regional Senior All-Star Softball Classic.

Chew will represent Region 2 North Division in the bracket-style event, which brings together standout senior softball players from across the state.

The classic is scheduled for Thursday, June 11, at the Buffalo High School Softball Field in Buffalo, with games beginning at 10 a.m. Live coverage and full game replays are available through HD Media Gameday on YouTube.

Chew’s selection marks another milestone for Petersburg softball. The last Lady Viking selected for the honor was Sammy Colaw four years ago.

The recognition comes after a standout senior season for Chew, who helped lead Petersburg through its Class AA state championship run.

By Camille Howard

I received a call several weeks ago from Juanita Pennington, a local beautician at The Beauty Corner in Petersburg.
She wanted to know if the Press would be interested in stopping by the shop and talking to one of her customers, who happens to be 104 years young.
I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to visit with someone that age and still visiting her hairdresser.
It was a terribly rainy morning and I was worried that the appointment had been canceled, but that was not the case.
I dropped in and met Juanita who was working on a perm for Joy “Nanny” Harper. She is a most interesting person with a sense of humor and quick wit.
Juanita has been styling Joy’s hair for about five years. Joy said she always did her own hair in the past, except on special occasions when a trip to the salon was needed.
Juanita pointed out that Joy still had quite a lot of dark hair, and if I’m not talking out of turn, puts a little rinse on it to even out the color.
Joy is from Seneca Rocks in Pendleton County, and spends her time taking care of her garden and flowers (with a little help), enjoys listing to the Bible on audio, and still does some light household duties.
Her caregiver/companion, Lisa Raines, takes good care of Joy and helped Juanita to finish the rinsing of her perm.
I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the shop, listening to other customers and Betty Rohrbaugh, the shop’s owner.
Juanita asked Joy if she could stand taking time to have her hair roller curled and dried under the drier and Joy replied, “I’ve come this far, I’ll finish it up!”
I asked Joy what was her secret to a long life. She laughed and said it was take the least medicines you can and don’t always run to the doctor!
It sounded like good advice and one that has proven true for her.
Her hair turned out lovely under the expert hands of Juanita. I like the idea that age doesn’t require we give up a little pampering. I told Joy she gives me hope!
Lisa sent me a poem Joy had written when she was an eighth grade student attending the little white one-room schoolhouse at Mouth of Seneca under the tutelage of Hurl Butcher.
The school is still standing today in Seneca Rocks on the Carl and Shirley Yokum property.
It took an entire winter to compose, but after reading it, I think it was worth every minute.
