Update:
This evening I spoke directly with Colorado State Veterinarian, Dr. Maggie Baldwin, regarding the current EHV/EHM outbreaks and the implications for Colorado.
At this time, there are no reported EHV cases in our state. However, state officials are actively investigating approximately 45 Colorado race participants who recently traveled to, and were listed on rosters for events in Texas and Oklahoma where confirmed outbreaks have occurred.
Dr. Baldwin indicated that the Colorado State Veterinarianβs Office, along with associated agencies, are preparing a formal statement which is expected to be released sometime tomorrow.
She also shared that she was encouraged to learn race producers in our region have already begun postponing events scheduled for the remainder of November. Dr. Baldwin emphasized that this particular strain appears to be more severe than those seen in the past, and stressed that limiting horse nonessential travel is especially important at this time.
Please watch for the official statement from the State Veterinarianβs Office and continue to act safely and responsibly. Our thoughts remain with all those affected by these outbreaks.
