Hats are one of my favorite categories to source for eBay, and I think they’re often overlooked by new resellers.

Most of the hats I find cost between $1 and $5, making them a low-risk investment with solid profit potential. They’re also one of the easiest items to work with. They photograph quickly, don’t take up much storage space, and shipping is simple.

To make sure every hat arrives in the same condition it left my inventory, I ship all of mine in a 7x7x7 box. It costs a little more than using a poly mailer, but protecting the shape of the hat is well worth it. A crushed hat can quickly turn into a return or unhappy customer.

Whether it’s vintage, trucker hats, outdoor brands, sports teams, or popular lifestyle brands, hats are a category that’s always worth checking when you’re at a thrift store or garage sale.

I found this pair of Salewa Dropline hiking shoes in like-new condition for just $16.99 at my local thrift store. Based on recent sales and their condition, they should sell for around $70–90.

Hiking shoes and boots are one of the most overlooked categories in thrift stores, but they can produce consistently strong profits. Many outdoor brands hold their value because hikers prioritize quality, comfort, and durability over buying new.

When you’re sourcing, keep an eye out for brands like Salewa, Salomon, La Sportiva, Scarpa, Lowa, Merrell, Oboz, Keen, and HOKA. Even if you don’t recognize a model, it’s worth taking a few seconds to look it up. You might be leaving a great flip behind.

Don’t overlook the shoe section. Some of the best profits in reselling are sitting on the bottom shelf.

This weekend I sold 31 items across eBay, Depop, and Poshmark. I believe every reseller should be cross-listing. Every platform has different buyers. Someone shopping on eBay isn’t always browsing Poshmark, Depop, or Mercari. The more places your inventory is listed, the more chances you have to make a sale.

I use Nifty to manage my cross-listing, and it’s completely changed how I run my business. If you’re only listing on one platform, you’re leaving money on the table. It takes the same inventory and gives it multiple opportunities to sell.

Here are some inventory photos I took today, and they all came from one person!

They run a business that sells and screen prints school and company logos on apparel from brands like Under Armour and Adidas. When certain styles get discontinued, brands stop making them, or an order falls through, I’m able to buy the leftover blank inventory for just 10% of the original MSRP.

For example, a $60 Under Armour jacket costs me $6. A $100 Adidas jacket? $10.

It’s one of my favorite sourcing relationships because I can pick up large quantities of quality, name-brand inventory at a fraction of retail—and it shows just how valuable building relationships can be as a reseller.

Sometimes the best inventory isn’t sitting on a thrift store rack or waiting at a garage sale. It’s about finding the right people, building trust, and creating opportunities that work for everyone.

Some customers really think “free shipping” means the shipping company just decides not to charge anyone.

Sure! Let me just call the post office and tell them this one’s on the house.

Shipping is never actually free. Someone is always paying for it—and when you’re selling an item for $10-$15, there isn’t exactly a ton of room to eat the shipping cost too.

Sometimes the best answer is the simplest one: “No”

Found these “Supreme x Louis Vuitton” shoes at Goodwill today for $13.99… and they’re about as fake as they come.

It got me thinking: if resellers list counterfeit items on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, or Depop, our listings get removed and our accounts can be penalized. So why are thrift stores allowed to put counterfeit products on the sales floor?

Whether it’s intentional or not, fake merchandise is still fake merchandise. It seems like the same standard should apply to everyone selling secondhand goods.

What do you think? Should thrift stores be held to the same rules as online resellers, or should they get a pass because they’re donation-based?
