A key architect of the Philadelphia Sound, Thom Bell’s lush, orchestral arrangements and genre-defying songwriting helped shape soul music in the late ’60s and ’70s — and laid the foundation for disco, R&B, and pop for decades to come.
Born in Jamaica and raised in Philadelphia, Bell’s classical training and love of film scores set him apart. He produced and co-wrote enduring hits for the Delfonics, the Stylistics, the Spinners, and many more — including “La-La (Means I Love You),” “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” and “I’ll Be Around.”
Bell passed away in 2022, but his music continues to resonate as both timeless and boundary-breaking.
