🧲 Shotgun Coil Securement — Eyes Lengthwise
FMCSA identifies these as “Eyes Lengthwise.”
Most drivers call them Shotgun Coils.
If they aren’t secured properly — blocked, cradled, and tied down to standard — they can become a public hazard, rolling off the trailer and into traffic.
Like an empty Buckshot ejected from the port of a Shotgun
Unlike Su***de Coils, which roll forward into the cab, Shotgun Coils pose a danger to everyone else on the road.
Every coil is a responsibility that extends beyond the driver’s seat
⚙️ Safe Securement Checklist
✅ Cradle or block the coil tight against racks and friction mats.
✅ Equal chain tension on both sides.
✅ Use blocking to contain lateral movement.
✅ Inspect after the first 50 miles and every 150 miles or 3 hours.
