📦 What Are Metal Coils?

A metal coil is a giant roll of steel, sometimes weighing tens of thousands of pounds. In these photos, it’s loaded crosswise—meaning the center hole, or eye, faces the sides of the trailer.

The FMCSA calls this position “transverse.” Flatbed drivers have another name: “Su***de Coil.” Why? Because if it isn’t tied down correctly and those chains pop, this massive roll of steel can roll forward toward the tractor, crushing the driver—or slide off into traffic. 🚛⚠️

🔗 Securement Basics

Chains run straight through the eye—front to front and back to back (never cross them).

Anything over 5,000 lbs requires coil racks or heavy wood blocks to keep it from shifting.

Proper securement = safer roads + higher-paying freight. 💰🛡️

A coil is a giant roll of steel, sometimes weighing tens of thousands of pounds. In these photos, it’s loaded crosswise – that means the center hole, or ‘eye,’ faces the sides of the trailer. FMCSA calls this position transverse. Flatbed drivers call it a "Su***de Coil" because if it isn't tied down correctly and the chains pop or become unfastened while driving, this giant roll of metal will roll directly towards the tractor, possibly crushing the driver, or it slides off into traffic. To keep it safe, chains run straight through the eye – front to front and back to back – never crossing in the middle. Anything over five thousand pounds needs coil racks or heavy wood blocks to keep it from shifting when the truck’s in motion.
