🧲 Shotgun Coil Securement — Eyes Lengthwise

FMCSA identifies these as “Eyes Lengthwise.”
Most drivers call them Shotgun Coils.

If they aren’t secured properly — blocked, cradled, and tied down to standard — they can become a public hazard, rolling off the trailer and into traffic.
Like an empty Buckshot ejected from the port of a Shotgun
Unlike Su***de Coils, which roll forward into the cab, Shotgun Coils pose a danger to everyone else on the road.
Every coil is a responsibility that extends beyond the driver’s seat

⚙️ Safe Securement Checklist

✅ Cradle or block the coil tight against racks and friction mats.
✅ Equal chain tension on both sides.
✅ Use blocking to contain lateral movement.
✅ Inspect after the first 50 miles and every 150 miles or 3 hours.

FMCSA §393.120 states
Ghost Dog Standard™ No such thing as over-securement

📈 Authority Close

This lesson comes from the Ghost Dog Safety Standard™, where law, discipline, and public safety meet.
Because when you haul steel on open roads, you’re carrying more than freight — you’re carrying responsibility.

🚛 Eye to the Side Coil Securement ⭕️ One Mistake Can Cost a Life

This coil might not look like much sitting still, but if it’s not chained right, it can roll at 70 mph straight through traffic.
That’s why every Dog Pack driver learns one rule: tie it down like lives depend on it.
Because they do!

This is called an eye-to-the-side coil. The eye faces the sides of the trailer.

Every chain placement has a purpose: front and rear to stop movement, ☆Pro Tip alternate pull for balance on turns
Block and Cradle with Coil Racks and Friction Mats
Check your Securement The first 50 miles and every 150 miles-3 hours (whichever comes first)

Ghost Dog Rule: Tie it down so it doesn’t fall off, and drive like it’s not tied down.

👉 Check your chain placement.
👉 Double-check your binders.
👉 Don’t roll until it’s right.

Rookies bring energy. Veterans bring experience.
The road doesn’t care who you are 🛣️ it only shows who’s ready.
What’s the one lesson you learned the hard way that every driver should know?
