As we mark the 30th Anniversary of the Million Man March, three groups from varied crime-filled sections of Philadelphia will gather for a brief but powerful program—lifting up the voices of our city’s most committed activists and social innovators. The struggle for economic, political, and social justice has been ongoing since we first arrived on these shores—and the struggle and work continue.
On Community Spotlight, Sunday, October 5, @ 11:30 AM (rebroadcast Monday @ 9 AM) on WKDU 91.7 FM or stream live at wkdu.org/listennow, I’ll be joined by Mazzie Casher.

Mazzie is a Philly-born activist, storyteller, and creative thinker who co-founded PHILLY TRUCE—a grassroots movement turned respected nonprofit, challenging poverty and violence across the city. In 2020, as Philly’s murder rate hit record highs, he stepped directly into the crisis—leading hands-on efforts and facing some of the city’s hardest realities.

His years in music, theater, and film shaped his rare ability to listen, connect, and tell stories that move people to act. Today, those same skills drive his mission: building trust, creating change, and pushing Philadelphia closer to its true promise.

Tune in for a conversation about struggle, resilience, and hope for our city’s future. Hear how you can get involved.

In Loving Memory of Carol “Lumpy” Lumford
An Honored Member of The Black Experience in Music (BEM)

This Sunday, September 28, Community Spotlight will replay a very special interview with our beloved fellow communicator, Carol “Lumpy” Lumford, who transitioned on September 7.
The conversation was originally recorded on December 29, 2024, a day filled with joy and community as we celebrated Kwanzaa together. Carol shared so much wisdom, spirit, and love during that talk—her words still resonate deeply.

Carol was not only a dedicated contributor to The Black Experience in Music, but also a dear personal friend of mine since the day we met. Her passion, voice, and presence will be missed more than words can express.

As we reflect on her life and legacy, may she rest in peace. 🙏🏾 My heart and prayers are with her family, friends, and all who loved her. Though we grieve, we take comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering.

Her final message to us all was simple, powerful, and pure "Never give up."

Tune in to hear Carol’s interview on Sunday at 11:30 AM on WKDU 91.7 FM and Monday at 9:00 AM (rebroadcast)
