Attorney Barry Gross spent the afternoon unraveling the earlier testimony of FBI Agent, Richard Hagg showing that his client, Dawn Chavous, worked for Universal based on a flat fee agreement not per hr. He also established a very different picture than that attempted by the prosecution challenging the government’s attempt to portray Ms. Chavous as financially desperate.

FBI agent Haag and the prosecution continued their “witch hunt” attempting to portray the defendants as corrupt by using financial records of the couple and city council records showing Councilman Johnson voted for the Zoning Ordinance for the Royal Theater. It is expected that cross examination by the defense will begin this afternoon.

FBI agent Haag, the same agent who Assistant US Attorney Eric Gibson said “regrettably and inappropriately” leaked grand jury testimony on a former high profile case in 2017, is reviewing mounds of documents, invoices, and emails about the work of Dawn Chavous. He is repeatedly interrupted by Chavous’ defense attorney, Barry Gross who questions the ability of Haag to reach conclusions about her work, worth, and value.

The United States Department of Justice attorney, Dubnoff, has spent the day building their case of innuendos and conjecture by reviewing emails, finances, bank statements, and court documents of the defendants. What they have yet to produce is any document, email, or record that points to any wrongdoing. The business practices of Universal Companies, Chavous Consulting, and Councilman Johnson appears to be questioned more because of their success rather than any illegal actions.

FBI Agent Richard Haag, on the witness stand for the 2nd day is pointing to financial losses of Universal in 2015 and 2016. Councilman Johnson along with his wife Dawn Chavous and 2 Universal Executives are accused of bribery which allegedly took place in 2013.

As court resumed this morning, FBI agent Haag returned to the witness stand for the 2nd day with Prosecutor Dubnoff introducing documents acquired by subpoena or search warrant many of which came from Carl Dranoff. The judge reminded the jury to keep an open mind until they have heard all testimony. Juror #1 was excused due to a family emergency leaving a pool of 16.

Judge McHugh ended court early today and has given the trial off tomorrow in observance of Yom Kippur. The trial will resume Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 9:30 am in courtroom 9B.

Attorney Dubnoff did a great job highlighting the 2nd Councilmanic District. In addition to Universal Companies, the district is home to sports stadiums, a casino, airport, and navy yard. However, with 150 interviews, millions of documents, search warrants and subpoenas in addition to 6 years of investigation, the FBI could only come up with a shakedown of music mogul and Philadelphia icon Kenny Gamble for $66,000. Oh and by the way, the councilman used his blushing bride with exemplary credentials and charter school expertise to accomplish the bribe.

FBI agent Hagg the lead investigator wants jurors to believe Councilman Johnson sold his office in return for 18 months of work by his wife Dawn Chavous, a highly successful professional with many accomplishments in her young career prior to her marriage.

The prosecution witness, FBI agent Haag, lays the foundation of the case - an investigation against Councilman Johnson that began in 2014, millions of documents that were reviewed, subpoenas, grand jury testimony, cell phone, emails, and 150 interviews. The prosecution argues that Ms. Chavous was the conduit for the bribe of her husband, Councilman Johnson. The prosecution did not enter into evidence this morning any proof of their conclusions.

Chavous’ services were engaged by CEO, Rahim Islam. The Defense on cross showed that consultants are engaged for their expertise of which Ms. Chavous has an exemplary record.
