KEEPING IT REAL
This is what I look like 75% of the time! (Sweatshirt & glasses on without my hair done)
PA SCHOOL IS NOT GLAMOROUS it is easily the most challenging and mentally taxing thing I have voluntarily done. In the month of October I had 8 exams and 2 practicals and in this past week I had 4 of those exams.

I spend most of my time at my desk or in the library while trying to balance some relaxing time for friends, family, loved ones, and daily gym sessions.

It is a rollercoaster of emotions and I try to celebrate the small victories while charging through the knock downs. Although extremely difficult I make an effort to forget about the past exams/ grades and move onto the next one. You really don’t have much time to process everything being thrown at you which makes it difficult to stay “okay”.

I just wanted to come on here and share that if you are going through PA school right now IT IS OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY! I certainly do not have it all together- I have broken down from the stress and understand that no one really has it completely together no matter how they come across.

It is extremely exhausting and cut yourself some slack you are doing the best you possibly can given these circumstances!

YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE PERFECT!

Please share with or tag someone you think needs a pick-me-up/realization.

Clinical Skills Lab was a blast last week learning how to perform ABGs, shots, and venipuncture on a very stiff nervous patient! Luckily I was able to prick them multiple times without any backlash

What is an Arterial Blood Gas (ABG)?
An ABG is a blood test that measures the pH, and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide from an artery (most commonly the non dominant hand radial artery). The test is used to check the function of the patient’s lungs and how well they are able to move oxygen into the blood and remove carbon dioxide. This test is commonly performed in the ICU and ER setting

Be a PA Advocate!

The PSPA has introduced Senate Bills 870 & 871 to modernize our practice Acts, giving the physician/PA team and institutions more flexibility in delivering care to our patients.

The intent of the PA Modernization Act Legislation is to bring Pennsylvania into alignment with all of our bordering states that we currently lag behind and onto a similar plane as many other states across the nation.

All states have an obligation to protect those within their borders by regulating the practice of medicine within the state. By including the PA profession in state law and designating a state agency to regulate PA practice, states both protect the public and define the role of PAs.

PA School Update
I dressed up to act as the PA in our clinical medicine seminar where I had to perform a comprehensive history and physical for a patient coming in with “rash x 4 days.” With the help from fellow classmates we created a differential diagnosis, suggested diagnostic testing to rule out DDx, and correctly identify the patients diagnosis with an effective treatment plan.

Finished up PD lab this week by performing optho, neck, and thyroid physical exams.

Completed my first exam of the semester which was for Physical Diagnosis that covered general survey, vitals, HENT, and skin.

Don’t confuse my smile for happiness I am extremely stressed because of Derm Clin Med exam Monday and Pharm exam Friday!

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!

Have you ever thought about the legacy you want to leave?

This is my personal vision statement: To be the person my children, parents, and loves one’s are proud of. To be the person known as caring and always there for others. To live a life of constant learning and improvement where I can help people reach their full potential. To be the person that people feel has helped them and my wisdom and love has touched them.

If I succeed in achieving that I believe I will die happily and peacefully.

Share with me what you want to leave behind!

Presence of mind and being fully aware of the now is something I have been on a journey to be successful at. The constant array of thoughts racing through my brain leads to unnecessary stress and emotions. The best practice I have put into place is continuously striving to be in the present moment whether that be studying for exams, watching lectures, or hanging with friends and family. Shutting off my brain to the outside noise such as past better times or future worries has been extremely beneficial and I still struggle with it daily.

Social Determinants of Health

Health begins way before illness and it is multifaceted. It is affected by where we live, learn, work, and play. Unfortunately there is health disparities linked to the social and economic disadvantaged. Do not ignore these barriers to good health for yourself or when you are treating patients as it will surely benefit the patient to be treated holistically instead of curing the disease/ illness.

Life throws a lot of obstacles and twists on your path to achieving your goals.

In hindsight from my journey to becoming a PA student I now understand why I endured certain barriers to accomplishing my goal.

Medicare pays PAs 85% of what an MD/DO receives for the exact same service which was I acted in the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Insurance reimbursement is extremely complicated with policies and exceptions but it is important to understand as this is how healthcare providers get paid!

I have been a photographer for 3 years and for the first time ever I was able to take graduation portraits for PAs! I had a blast taking pictures of them and getting the chance to talk to soon to be PA-C. I cannot believe I’ll be in their shoes in just 2 years!!
