Almost a year after I met Anastasia Shpot and her mother as Ukrainian refugees in Warsaw, I’m in her home town of Pershotravens’k, Ukraine, just 25 miles from the front lines in Donetsk. She’s reunited with her father, a military chaplain, as well as her grandparents and friends. Today she’s performing in her childhood church, in honor of military brigades fighting nearby. She’s scared, but her heart is full being back in her country, with her family and in the community in which she grew up.
