As we head into tonight’s Passages, the 26th concert in this series, a word about our venue, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church...

For 50+ years, St. Michael’s has run a food pantry program, providing neighbors with groceries every Thursday. As you might expect, the last few weeks have seen record numbers of people showing up for food.

We’re grateful for this venue and to the community at St. Michael’s who welcomed us into their home 3 years ago.

When you buy a ticket to Passages, you help keep the food pantry program going through the money we give to the church each month, and you help us protect the church community through our monthly event insurance policy. Thank you!

See you tonight. Presales close at 6pm. Tickets also available at the door. 🌀

Artist Highlight ~ Lady Prowl ~ DJ Set

For more than a decade, we’ve been listening to Elena Nestico aka Lady Prowl expertly DJ a wide spectrum of genres - from dancehall and dub to electro and bass music to dark ambient and drones. Lady Prowl is a DJ whose technical skills and ear for the mix stack up to her impeccable selections. She’s also a talented producer with no fear of experimentation or genre contortion. We can think of no better choice for the opening and intermission sets at Passages, on a night in which a live dub set will be followed in stark contrast with an experimental guitar performance.

We highly recommend arriving at 7pm this Saturday to catch this much anticipated 2-hour set in the labyrinth.

Official Bio ~~

Lady Prowl is the musical alias of Philadelphia resident, visual artist, and architectural designer, Elena Nestico. A long time participant in the east coast underground rave scene, She began collecting records after acquiring her first pair of turntables in high school. With DJ experience spanning over 15 years, Elena possesses an in-depth knowledge of music across a myriad of genres. As a sound designer, her artistic vision embraces the ragged discards of electronic music to create unusual narratives, in both her solo and collaborative projects. Catch Lady Prowl’s monthly show “Dissociated” on Great Circles Radio every 4th Saturday of the month for “a sonic escape from our current dystopia.”

This Friday 9pm-12am, after a couple weeks off, we return to the Sound Lounge at for another night of expertly selected records on the Altec system.

Continuing our steady run of presenting selectors with deep knowledge across a wide range of genres, we are thrilled to welcome XELA aka Alex Coppola. XELA has been a Great Circles Radio resident for 3+ years. His first show, ISLAND TIME DIGS, focused on African, Latin and Caribbean records.

In late 2024, with an ear for more contemporary, hyperniche sounds from all over the globe, XELA introduced his current show, OPEN-WORLD. Through OPEN-WORLD, XELA introduces listeners to exotic sounds like Kurdish Halay music from Turkey, Neo-Gamelan and Computer Java from Indonesia, and the sounds of Nigerian TikTok aka TrenchTok.

Alex is also a talented painter whose unique portrait work recently showed at .records

Artist Highlight ~ Bentley Anderson ~ Live Set

Bentley Anderson is a New York City based musician, working in the realm of noise and experimental music. Exploring the language of sound and the art of improvisation-as-composition, are fundamental in his work. He focuses on a texture-based aesthetic that attempts to form a narrative expression with sound. As a guitarist Anderson has shaped a personal way of engaging with the instrument, using prepared techniques and a customized approach. Primarily performing solo, he has collaborated with luminaries such as Lee Ranaldo [of Sonic Youth] and Leila Bordreuil. Decontrol is a cassette label run by Anderson that releases his own work as well as others in the experimental music community of NYC.

Also performing ~ Soon Come [Live] | Lady Prowl [DJ]

Artist Highlight ~ Soon Come ~ Live Dub Set !

Upon arriving in Philadelphia a few years ago, Soon Come aka Dan Brenner found his way to us via mutual friends with deep knowledge and respect for Jamaican music. He’s been an active member of the community ever since.

As the Host of ‘Every Spoil Is A Style’ on Great Circles Radio since early 2024, Soon Come eschews gatekeeping in favor of sharing historical context for the records he plays, and the lineage of classic Jamaican riddims.

Dan builds his own reverb tanks and teaches others how to do it, and he recently dropped an exclusive dub sample pack for Koala Sampler, all created in his home studio. He also hosts the Reggae Record Swap event series at .records

Back in July, Dan initiated a special event at GC, ‘Dub Day Afternoon.’ The twists and turns and mind-blowing sample manipulation of his nearly hour-long live Dub set led us to invite him to bring his sound into the world of Passages.

Official Bio ~~
Perched in the corners of basements and yards in Brooklyn after hours, lounging in a deep meditation for years, Soon Come soaked up the culture and refracted it through his prism to honor Jamaica’s musical heritage. He’s still scattering its rays to the four corners of the Earth from Philadelphia, channeling his outsider perspective into a soundscape that feels imperfect and rare. Every spoil is a style.

This Friday Nov. 7th 8-11pm EST - Variant Selections - live on Great Circles Radio
Sounds from Carl Ritger // Chaperone // Westov Temple

Celebrating Ritger’s new album ‘The Measures’ on x .vincent.presents
and featuring excerpts from the release mixed in during the show.

On August 14, 2021, Great Circles and Enmossed hosted an all-day event on our patio and in the shop, featuring 9 live sets, including Ritger. The recordings from that day led to the Chaperone / WOLF DEM split release on GC, and now ‘The Measures.’

“Initially engineered for performance at the joint invitation of Enmossed & Great Circles, the bulk of the tape’s a-side actually showcases the direct board recording from the public debut of this material. The rest is cobbled together from casts of resonance captured in my home studio, back when home was still Philadelphia.

It’s a wild document from a pivotal time for me, personally, & I hope its various eddies & currents churn something up for the listeners.”

Passages Season 4, Program 2 ~ Saturday, November 15th at 7pm. Tickets ~ https://link.dice.fm/N2d9be25284d

For this November gathering, we’re embracing the progressive transition to earlier darkness, bare trees and mid-autumn reflection, and filling the sanctuary with subterranean rumbles, dubbed out textures, dark drones, massive reverb, and decaying samples.

Tomorrow, 12-8pm, right here in our neighborhood - it’s the 17th annual Kensington Kinetic Derby & Arts Festival!

We’ll be posted up outside with DJs all day ~~
~ 12pm
~ 2pm
~ 4pm

If you’ve ever been to the Derby, you know the place to be is the mudpit. This year the mudpit is at our corner, Frankford and Hagert! Be sure to get there before 2pm.

From 12-1pm, you can check out all the wild kinetic sculptures on the 2400 block of Martha Street before they’re obliterated by the mud.

Across the street from our stage, on the left side of the lot, , (my other passion) will have the beer tent. Thanks to Philadelphia Brewing, all proceeds go right back into making good things happen in East Kensington through Mini-Grants, Arts Committee events, and other initiatives.

And stick around for on the right side of the Phila Brewing lot, 6-8pm.

Frankford Ave. will be closed from York to Sergeant, and filled with vendors, food trucks, and more!

Head to the Kensington Kinetic Arts site for more info, a festival map, and the Derby route -- https://www.kensingtonkineticarts.org/

This Friday 9p-12a MALK steps up for our weekly Friday residency in The Sound Lounge

For the past 10 years, his record label - Sweet Chunk Sound - has been releasing sounds ranging from Lo-Hi Hip-Hop to Japanese Ambient to chopped up Jazz to Post Punk, always with a thread of experimentation and an ear for overlooked Internet gems - some of it created my MALK himself.

Since February 2022, MALK’s Great Circles Radio show, also named after the label, has focused on a different genre, concept, and/or geography every month. It’s usually a master class, and it’s quite possible that every guest he’s ever invited now has their own show.

He also played the very first sounds in our zone at Making Time ∞ last month - a 90-minute DJ mix of his own work!

MALK is one of the deepest music heads we’ve ever met. Join us for this musical adventure!
