The Daily Pennsylvanian Alumni Association

The Daily Pennsylvanian Alumni Association This is the official page for all alumni who have worked at The Daily Pennsylvanian, Inc. The Board meets in Philadelphia three times each year.

The Daily Pennsylvanian Alumni Association (DPAA) is an organization of alumni of the University of Pennsylvania's student newspaper, The Daily Pennsylvanian. The DPAA has a dual mission of serving both its alumni members and the current student staff of the DP. The newspaper was founded in 1885 (originally as "The Pennsylvanian" before becoming daily). The DPAA was created in 1987, although there had been several previous short-lived attempts to create an alumni organization dating back to the 1960s. More than 3,000 living DP alumni have joined the DPAA and can be found through the alumni directory on this website. Many become Paid Members of the DPAA each year, gaining access to certain Paid Member-only features and services, and defraying the costs of running the DPAA. One of the goals of the DPAA is to cover its costs, so that the alumni organization does not need to draw funds away from the newspaper. The DPAA is run by a 12-person Board of Directors, who serve staggered three-year terms. Alumni interested in serving on the Board may nominate themselves each fall by contacting us at [email protected]. If you are a DP alumnus who has not received periodic emails or mailings from us, and you haven't previously used this site, please sign up for your free Basic Membership by going to dpalumni.com. If you have previously registered with the DPAA and want to get your login name and password to update your contact information or access other features of the website, please write us a short email at [email protected] with your name and class year, and we'll send you login information. Contributions to the DP/DPAA are greatly and gratefully appreciated. You can designate a contribution to the Eric Jacobs Scholarship Fund, which helps current DP students devote more time to the DP instead of maintaining outside jobs, or the DP Development Fund, which aims to provide for a new home for the DP and other long-term needs of the organization.

Every generation has to learn what a free press is worth. At The Daily Pennsylvanian, students learn it one story at a time. They ask the questions. They chase the facts. They make the edits. They carry the responsibility of putting something real in front of their community. And then it becomes print. Something visible. Something physical. Something that says this work mattered enough to be held. That is what our Keepers of the Press campaign is about. Keeping the printed DP alive for the students doing the work now, and for the students who will learn from it next.

As the nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we are asking 76 donors to make a gift of $250 or more in honor of the enduring importance of a free press and the student journalists who work at The Daily Pennsylvanian. Because some traditions are worth printing.

The printed DP is the final product. But the real story is what happens before it reaches campus. Students reported it, edited it, designed it, produced it, and put their names behind it. That is the DP experience. The student newsroom makes it possible. The printed paper makes their work visible. Keepers of the Press helps preserve both. Support student journalism and the printed DP by becoming a Keeper of the Press. A campus newspaper does something a website cannot. It gives campus journalism a physical place in the life of a university. It puts student reporting where people can see it, pick it up, talk about it, and remember that independent journalism is not abstract. It is made by real students doing real work. That is what Keepers of the Press is about.
This campaign supports the print edition of The Daily Pennsylvanian and the student newsroom that produces it. A gift of $250 or more makes you a Keeper and helps sustain one of Penn’s most visible traditions of independent student journalism. Help keep the DP present on campus and strong for the students who will carry it next. For 142 years, The Daily Pennsylvanian has been printed, read, passed along, saved, debated, and remembered.
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, we are launching Keepers of the Press, a special campaign to sustain the printed DP and the independent student newsroom behind it.

Our goal is simple and symbolic: Seventy-six donors giving $250 or more in honor of 1776, the First Amendment, and the enduring role of a free press.
