HOWDY! Kids Corner producer Robert Drake here ... People ask about the success and longevity of Kids Corner and I always say that the secret is letting Kathy simply be Kathy. It is both a gift for the listeners/fans and for those of us who work alongside her at WXPN.

Sometimes you don't realize until hindsight, how important people are in your life's path, but thankfully Kathy O’Connell is not such a person. I realized upon meeting her back in January 1988 just how pivotal that moment was to be for me moving forward.

Fast forward to the present - Kathy and I have been together longer than most married couples (32+ years!) Together we have carved out a unique niche in local radio and truly love what we do ... and we have become the best of friends!

So - today I want to wish my partner-in-crime Kathy O'Connell a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 💜🎂🎉

Today, December 2, is the day of interment for Kids Corner librarian Joe Hilton. 💔

As we mourn the passing of a member of the Kids Corner family, we celebrate the joy he brought us and generations of families over the past thirty years on Kids Corner. We continue to keep the joy of reading as part of the mission of our program and will be remembering Joe with a unique outreach program post-pandemic. Details will be announced after the holidays.

As Joe visited Kids Corner the first Wednesday of each month (tonight), it seems fitting to rebroadcast his final appearance on Kids Corner - recorded just days before his untimely passing, Saturday, November 21.

Listen tonight at 7pm ET on WXPN and live worldwide XPN.org

Share a story with someone this season, in memory of Joe. 📚

Heavy hearts as we mourn the passing of one of the members of our Kids Corner family.

Joe Hilton, Kids Corner's longtime librarian, died peacefully in his sleep over the weekend. Joe had been with Kids Corner on WXPN since the start, celebrating the joy of reading with generations of kids from around the region and later, as technology grew, around the world.

Joe had a passion for books that was immeasurable! He was born to be a librarian. His typically-quiet demeanor faded away when given the opportunity to talk books with others, especially kids.

He joined Kids Corner soon after we began in 1988 and consistently had the most-popular monthly segment for years.

As the age of the internet grew in the early-to-mid ‘90s, we noticed a dip in the traffic and interest that kids had for reading and we were, frankly, a bit concerned.

Then in 1997, Harry Potter was introduced to the world and once again kids jammed the telephone lines to talk with Joe and Kids Corner host Kathy O’Connell about all things Potter and more!

Joe Hilton represented the joy of reading - but to us, reading represented the joy of Joe.

Joe Hilton stepped up to volunteer at almost every Kids Corner outreach event, taking time to help kids create bookmarks while sharing inside secrets on what books they love best. Joe’s patience with kids was legendary - he’d arrive early and stay until every kid who wanted to talk books with him had that chance.

Since the pandemic, Joe has been recording his monthly visits with us safely in our studios. His most-recent visit was just a week or so ago and will air Wednesday, December 2 at 7pm ET on WXPN and worldwide at XPN.org

While we will miss Joe and all he brought to our little corner of the radio world, his passion for reading was infectious and will continue to be a cornerstone of the mission of Kids Corner in the years ahead.

Joe always said, there are many ways to tell a story. We plan to keep that mantra in mind moving forward.

Rest in Peace Joe, knowing you were loved. 💙

Thanks to Kathy from Kids Corner on WXPN for reminding me that it's Valentine's Day! I'd been trying to write a song about Valentine's day for years but they all felt too sweet and saccharine and eventually got abandoned. Then I remembered the weird anxiety I felt around this holiday as a child being forced to give cards to everyone. And instead of a sweet song, this one came out and it was so fun to sing. Please enjoy this anti-valentine's day song on this valentine's day.
Watch our award winning musical from your living room! Due to popular demand the puppet-powered eco-musical is now available for families to watch at home. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/curious-think-outside-the-pipeline-tickets-261415339317 CURIOUS tells the story of a young girl and her nonbinary sibling who organize their community to fight for clean air. Inspired by Philly Thrive's victorious community-powered shut down of our local oil refinery, and the youth-led climate justice movement, the Ants deliver with humor and harmony, leaving audiences hopeful and singing along. BREAKING... Don't worry. This is very good news. I can now announce the guests for the next two episodes of the LLoyDeeLloyD Show. On Tuesday, January 12th, at 10:30am ET I'll be chatting with The Uncle Devin Show and Kathy O'Connell about how to talk to kids about events that are upsetting and possibly traumatic. These are two of America's most important voices in family media as the hosts of WEE Nation Radio and Kids Corner on WXPN respectively. They know how to talk to kids and they bring very different perspectives and backgrounds to the issue. The show will be appropriate for all ages. In addition to talking we'll be sharing music with each other (of course!) Then on Monday, January 18th we'll be celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a visit from master kora player Yacuoba Sissoko. Can you believe it? 10:30 am ET. Both shows are right here on the Dees FB page. Spread the word!
It was a beautiful day in Brooklyn when Amelia Robinson/Mil's Trills heard I was in town and asked me to meet her for a bagel and an impromptu songwriting session. We sat on a random stoop (how New York!) and wrote a lovely song about getting through the rough times. This was more than a year ago. We couldn’t have known how much we were going to need this song in these difficult days. How blessed am I to have such wonderful friends to make music with? We decided to record this together and now you can hear “Seize The Day” TOMORROW when my EP, Good Foot, releases everywhere. (PS. our good friends at Kids Corner on WXPN are already spinning it! Thanks y’all!) --- Ashli's studio picture courtesy of Devin O'Brien Album design by Michael Wysong
