Isolated strong-to-severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening across a wide swath of the I-95 corridor from D.C. to NYC. Expect torrential downpours, difficulty driving dude to low visibility, strong gusty winds and the threat for small hail from the stronger storms.

Lightning strikes increase in frequency as coastal low intensifies offshore - this is the culprit for unseasonably cool temps and rain being experienced throughout the region. Storm will dominate the regional pattern for the next few days, expect blustery and cool conditions for the upcoming memorial day holiday weekend.

Strong wind gusts associated with an incoming cold front are expected this evening for parts of the northern mid-Atlantic, generally from DC through southeastern Pennsylvania, into New Jersey and southern New York:

NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center: “Thunderstorm development is expected within the next
couple of hours across parts of the Mid-Atlantic region. The
convective environment should support a damaging wind threat into
the evening hours. Trends will be monitored for possible watch
issuance. Areas affected...Northern Virginia into central Maryland...southeast
Pennsylvania...and northwest New Jersey”

Accumulating snow is expected to arrive later this afternoon for the northern mid-Atlantic. The heaviest snow is expected to fall late this evening through the overnight hours tonight.

While generally a nuisance event of Baltimore, a moderate 2-3” is expected to have fallen in the Philadelphia area by tomorrow morning. 4-6” is likely Cape May, NJ and the Delmarva. Heavier amounts will generally remain contained south of the Mason-Dixon, with a disruptive 4-8” likely in DC.
