Who doesn’t love a new car or a new outfit? It makes you feel good. Then you start to ask questions about the necessity of the purchase. Let’s be honest about former commissioner Danielle Outlaw. She didn’t do a bad job considering the lack of leadership and support she had within City Hall and from the FOP. The commissioner didn’t pull a single trigger, falsify a single confession or release any undeserving criminals from jail.

The media will love the new commissioner but understand he has history and some reporter is digging through his record, and those who reported to him. They will speak about school violence and shootings at football games and on school properties . They will reference the amount of deaths involving school age teenagers.

Mayor-elect Cherelle Parker is expected to name Kevin Bethel, Chief of School Safety at The School District of Philadelphia, as the city's police commissioner.

Philadelphia’s leaders within the minority community that are advocating for a Philadelphia 76ers downtown arena should pay cost attention to what happened in Camden.

Over 1000 people were hired, and only 21 Camden residents were hired. $200 million dollars in tax credits were issued to the Sixers and Subura. Yet, seven years later, the Philadelphia 76ers employ only 11 Camden residents out of its 275 employees. Pointing to a trend in the poorest city in New Jersey, the carmaker Subaru, which received a $118 million tax break in 2014, employs just 10 Camden residents out of its 786 employees.

Tax credits matter but so do the details.....

As the Philadelphia 76ers move forward with a controversial proposal to build a $1.3 billion sports arena on Market Street only a block from Chinatown, critics ask what effect the new 18,500-person facility will have on the historic neighborhood.

Today is Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains around the world! Many know the story of Diwali in the Hindu tradition: Rama and Sita return home after a long exile, and people joyously light the kingdom with oil lamps. In the Jain tradition, Diwali marks Mahavira’s attainment of moksha. In the Sikh tradition, Diwali marks another kind of return: Bandi Chhor Divas, the Day of Liberation.

We’ve all seen them. Fake license plates that have flooded the streets, expressways, and highways. The Internet, Staples, and home printers have allowed for this influx. Drivers simply cut, paste, and print. Recently passed laws restrict the ability of Philadelphia Police Department to do their job, and remove these unsafe, unlicensed, and unregistered driver’s off the streets of Philadelphia. We completely understand what Councilman Isiah Thomas was attempting to curtail but the driving equality bill has resulted in lawlessness on the streets of Philadelphia.

Last night, it appears a driver fled the scene of an accident involving the Philadelphia 76ers Kelly Oubre. Why? Perhaps no license, insurance or registration. One of the first things Mayor elect Cherelle L. Parker should do with the presumed new Council President Kenyatta Johnson is too repeal this legislation. Find a better solution to achieve equality by better police training and warnings. Criminal behavior is connected.

Step one, allow the police to stop drivers with obvious fraudulent license plates, and expired temporary tags. This would be a great start to making the roads safer.

Step two, City of Philadelphia Government and Philadelphia City Council should create and or develop a partnership with a local car insurance company that helps to make insurance premiums more economically affordable. Perhaps that carrier could develop a income base premium.

Step three, better train police to issue warnings were appropriate instead of citations. Officers discretion matters.

Step four, educate Philadelphia residents that any parked car with both expired inspection stickers, fraudulent tags will be towed by Philadelphia Parking Authority

Now is the time to act.

Goode, Street, Nutter and now Parker. Black leaders that ascended to the leadership role of Mayor. What has changed? Since 2010, black homeownership has dropped below 50% since the 1970. Black mortgage applicant continue to be disproportionately denied compared to their white peers. Over 80% of contracts distributed by the City of Philadelphia and quasi governmental agencies were given to white males. Despite representing over 43% of the population, only 6% of all businesses in Philadelphia are African American owned and operated.

Celebrate her monumental victory but be cognizant that investors, developers, business owners, corporate stewards, and homeowners are driving this bus. Philadelphia’s competition King of Prussia, Conshohocken, Plymouth Meeting, Delaware, and other areas Why? Employers, employees identify these areas as being preferential based on lower taxes, better schools, cleaner streets, and safer neighborhoods.

Parker easily beat her Republican rival David Oh, in a city where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 7-to-1.
