From BastiaanSlabbers.com:
On Photographing Every Day Life's Normal

As a photographer most of the time my lens is focussed on official gatherings.

Typically I document press conferences, people addressing a crowd, rallies, arts culture and sports events, and so on.

These events often appear to be designed to maximize the visual power of the moments. But with a certain level of choreography comes prediction and they often lack mundane spontaneity that one typically find when photographing Every Day Life in the public arena.

It is never my goal in Street Photography to simply chase the so-called ‘Decisive Moment’ for ‘Art’s sake’. I rather present this set of images as ‘out of context’ documentations of things, people and places that somehow caught my eye when witnessing them that moment.

The images in this set were captured over several years in both the US and (for no particular reason) the Netherlands. I created a Board on Getty Images that I can add to as more come in later. For me this set is as a source of inspiration for the future when (if ever) things will return to the old normal.

Perhaps they can even be a benchmark to see were we came from in the hope to better the things that need to change and keep those things that are great anyway.

TIL how to match a soundtrack to video in Ableton Live. Yesterday I captured the footage during a ride on my local trails and edited in BlackMagic's Davinci Resolve 17 as part of the process of producing fresh content for my new cycling related YT channel. This morning I created this soundtrack with Ableton and various Native Instruments plugins and worked on creating sync between music and visuals.

This '96 Olympus Camedia C-400 was my first digital camera, today the iconic company announced its retirement from the camera industry. Although I can’t exactly remember what I payed for it, back then. I must have thought that it was a good investment to further my personal development (whatever path that may led to).

It must have been in the second year art school, a few years before the Millennium when I purchased this marvel of technic… Even though it was one of the most affordable (consumer level) models I could lay my hands on I do remember it wasn’t exactly cheap (for a student).

It’s funny what photogs complain about these days. The internal memory (not even a single memory card!) could hold a whopping 12 high-res images in an amazing 640x480px resolution. Now almost twenty-five years that I deep-dived into #DigitalPhotography I have some state-of-the-art camera bodies resting on a shelve that can take the some amount of images in a second as this old trusty Olympus did in a day.

Having this tool made the digital photo-bug bit me hard and I stared to experiment with shooting tons of images. Wel, 12 at the time before I had to offload the ‘roll’. Unfortunately images produced by my Olympus were so small and so compressed that none could really stand the test of time other then a set of images I shot each morning, on the same spot, from the train window while heading to school.

One other project I remember well happened during an open house of Royal Academy of Art The Hague - KABK Den Haag. We installed a computer near the front entrance. On the screen a slideshow with images taken inside the building played in an endless loop. The y were shot by random visitors I asked at the door. I offered to use my camera and asked them to photograph whatever they saw. Most visitors were curious family members of the students who’s ateliers where in this building. Upon departure the camera was returned. I offloaded the images and added them to the slideshow. The process would repeat.
After a while I noticed that new visitors would only step into the door, watch this slideshow and felt satisfied enough from the presentation that they turned around and skip the rest of the tour. The project was titled: “The Outsider Inside”.

So, I instantly fell in love with the potential of immediacy that digital photography. As art and technology go hand in hand I am always curious what tools camera manufactures come up for the future. But sadly, today after 84 years one iconic camera manufacture announced its permanent retirement from manufacturing cameras. ( https://petapixel.com/2020/06/24/olympus-exits-the-camera-business/ )

The photos of the events I covered yesterday are now grouped into three sets. The first is about a non-violent counter-protest of a "Shutdown the Shutdown" rally in Mt Ary on Saturday morning.

Anti-Quarantine rally met with counter protest in Philadelphia (17 photos) - https://www.gettyimages.com/search/2/image?events=775517711&family=editorial&sort=newest#license

Set two contains the my photos of the non-violent take-a-knee protest at City Hall.

The mid-day protest marched from City Hall towards the Art Museum steps and back. As I was focussed on filing a first set I am not 100% certain how things developed from there. I caught up with a large group near Hahnemann Hospital. PPD and State Troopers already closed off the entrance to the Expressway when things seem to take a turn. Some time was spend at this location before protestors convened at City Hall (and the Frank Rizzo statue), around five.

Wrote this a few weeks back and adapted it to our current situation in keeping the creative juices flowing as a #FreelanceCreative.

Each beginning of the year I attempt to learn a new skill. Typically these first months of each year tend to be less hectic than the rest of the year. While this year began relative normal the Coronavirus outbreak created a massive challenge for all of us.

Perhaps a little more intensive than initially planned I use this current work-from-home period to dedicate time to learn something new. Or, like this year, to revisit a technic I have not used in a while....

Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Philadelphia, PA after canceling an earlier event in Cleveland, OH due to health concerns regarding COVID-19 Coronavirus at large gatherings. Campaign staffers from Biden’s Philadelphia based headquarters, supporters and a handful of climate activists gathered at the National Constitution Center to hear the former Vice-president’s remarks after winning the Michigan primaries and taking the lead in the race for the 2020 #USElections.
