Franchetti’s Facts: Caving to extreme demands endangers higher education.

Last semester, “Graduate Employees Together – University of Pennsylvania” (GET-UP), a UAW affiliate, authorized a strike after more than a year of negotiations, including “42 bargaining sessions and reaching 23 tentative agreements”. The union has set February 17th 2026, as the deadline and, unless they give up some of their demands, it is critical that Penn breaks this strike.

NEWS | The changes mark the board’s first overhaul in more than a decade.

Penn’s board of trustees has made the first substantial changes to the University’s code of conduct in more than a decade. The reform follows former President Liz Magill and former board chair Scott L. Bok’s resignations in response to turmoil surrounding the school’s handling of incidents following the events of October 7th, 2023. Board chair Ramanan Raghavendran states that the review was “a regular revisiting of our governance procedures,” though it is unclear why no other review occurred prior.

NEWS | In light of recent uprisings in Iran, Penn students gather to protest against the regime:

Around 75 to 100 people rallied at 34th and Walnut on January 16th 2026, calling for the end of the Ayatollah’s regime in Iran and for violence against protestors to cease. The rally was organized by the Penn Persian Society following several days of anti-government protests in Iran, met with the state’s use of force. A communications blackout imposed by the Iranian government has limited contact with people inside the country, and casualty estimates range from 12,000 to 20,000 people.

Strong windstorm pummels campus: Locust Walk sees downed branches, gusts strong enough to knock people over.

Strong winds of up to 60 mph pummeled campus early Sunday evening, resulting in a large down branch on Locust Walk, power outages surrounding campus, and at least one downed power line on campus as of Sunday at 7:00 PM. A special weather statement was issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at 4:48 pm warning of a strong approaching cold front containing wind gusts of up to 60 mph that advised the public to “consider seeking shelter inside a building”. A high wind warning issued earlier in the afternoon remains in effect until Monday at 6:00 pm.

Interim President of Penn Larry Jameson released a statement on January 28th to the Penn community about “recent developments from Washington that directly affect higher education” and lists seven such developments: research funding, financial aid, visas, immigration status, student loans, endowments, and DEI programs. Jameson noted that the statement is meant to “provide guidance to sustain our missions while ensuring Penn complies with federal law” and goes on to state that “Penn’s financial outlook is sound”, that “we will uphold Penn’s values”, and that the university is monitoring any developments.

In September of 2024, Penn announced that it would “refrain from institutional statements made in response to local and world events except for those which have direct and significant bearing on University functions”. Messages that have been sent since this policy change include topics such as the Draw Down the Lightning grant initiative, Climate Week at Penn, and the changeover in the School of Arts & Sciences leadership.

The Daily Pennsylvanian posted an article on January 27th titled Penn remains silent on Trump’s new immigration policies as campus groups prepare response. The article noted that in November 2016, the then-President of Penn Amy Guttman announced that the University would be a sanctuary for undocumented students and that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would not be allowed on campus. It is unclear if Jameson’s statement was released in response to the DP article.

The Social Ivy | Stop falling for a false dichotomy in your relationships

Nothing makes you reminisce about long-lost loves or the right person from the wrong time quite like being home for the holidays—and films certainly don’t help.

If your conception of romance was limited to this genre, you’d think that anything but a life-altering relationship was anticlimactic. Take modern classics like Love Actually and The Holiday. In both stories, British-accent-ridden, star-crossed affairs quickly turn to happily ever after, surmounting even transatlantic-sized logistical barriers. Nothing in life is that black-and-white, certainly not the gray and rainy Great Britain.
