of the Day….. “John Michael Bishop”…
==========================================

John Michael Bishop (Born on Today’s date in 1936):

is an who shared (with co-worker Harold Varmus) of the Nobel Prize for or Medicine in 1989 for achievements in clarifying the cellular origins of retroviral oncogenes associated with cancer. They showed that normal genes under certain circumstances can cause cancer, and this new insight profoundly changed the understanding of cancer. When introduce genes into the DNA of host cells, normal cell growth, division or differentiation results in mutations creating cancer genes, known as oncogenes. Such oncogenes can then become part of the host’s own DNA.

“Science now finds itself in strife with society: admired but mistrusted; offering hope for the future but creating ambiguous choice; richly supported yet unable to fulfill all its promise; boasting remarkable advances but criticized for not serving more directly the goals of society”.
— J. Michael Bishop

Rudolf Ludwig Mossbauer (Born on Today’s date in 1929):

“German physicist and co-winner (with Robert Hofstadter) of the Prize for in 1961 for his concerning the resonance absorption of gamma-rays and his discovery in this connection of the effect”.

The Mossbauer Effect occurs when gamma rays emitted from nuclei of isotopes have an unvarying wavelength and frequency. This occurs if the emitting nuclei are tightly held in a crystal. Normally, the energy of the rays would be changed because of the recoil of the radiating nucleus. Mossbauer’s discoveries helped to prove 's general theory of relativity. His discoveries are also used to measure the magnetic field of atomic nuclei and to study other properties of solid .

" was the strangest man in all of mathematics, probably in the entire history of science. He has been compared to a bursting supernova, illuminating the darkest, most profound corners of , before being tragically struck down by tuberculosis at the age of 33... Working in total isolation from the main currents of his field, he was able to rederive 100 years’ worth of Western mathematics on his own. The tragedy of his life is that much of his work was wasted rediscovering known mathematics"..

"People ask me often [whether] the Nobel Prize [was] the thing you were aiming for all your life, and I say that would be crazy. Nobody would aim for a Nobel Prize because, if you didn’t get it, your whole life would be wasted. What we were aiming at was getting people well, and the satisfaction of that is much greater than any prize you can get".
