Life lessons I've learned thus far, gimmicky approaches will never last in industries. Focus on being truly innovative in your space, be an effective leader and communicator, and stick to your core values in the face of adversity. If you're thinking about healthcare careers, drug development, or biotech startups, you need to think different.

A during a conversation with David Willbrand he laid this gem on me when I asked his perspective on advising aspiring entrepreneurs.

Lmaooo who ever made this is genius. But let's define some terms.

β—‹~~~~~~~~~~~~~~β—‹~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~β—‹
Hypertrophy: An increase in cellular mass and size.

Hyperplasia: An increase in the number of cells in an organ or tissue. These cells appear normal under a microscope. They are not cancer, but may become cancer.

Dysplasia: Cells that look abnormal under a microscope but are not cancer.

Cancer: A term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. There are several main types of cancer. Carcinoma is a cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs. Sarcoma is a cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue. Leukemia is a cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue, such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood. Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system.

BREAKING NEWS FOR ASPIRING MEDICAL STUDENTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"The game-changing new financial aid program expands Weill Cornell Medicine’s scholarship offerings to provide debt-free education to all medical students with demonstrated financial need beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year and then every year thereafter in perpetuity. By replacing student loans with scholarships that cover tuition, housing and other living expenses, the program ensures that all students, including those from economically diverse backgrounds, can pursue their medical education without financial burden. Let's start this Monday off on the right foot, remember science is a process and a tool. In the US, for some reason or reasons, many in the public space seem to be taking a step back away from science, but the smart money is always to bet on innovation. So just a reminder of some of the things we have done really well.
There are days where I can write pages within hours, then there are days where it takes me an hour to put a paragraph on a page. The trick that I've found is to be consistent. Dedicate a few hours a day, maybe 1 to 2 at least to sitting down undistracted and putting words on the page when you have a writing goal. It's much easier to edit, expand for clarity, or make things more succinct, than it is to generate the perfect sentence each time.
What writing tricks have you used that work for you? I'd love to know!
I recently got fu***ng destroyed by a reviewer on a techniques paper I'm 2nd author on lol. A technical error displayed our figure legends from the entire paper, so there was essentially no experimental details lol. The reviewer's tone was literally like "I Would Never Publish Such Garbage"... needless to say he or she was perturbed lmao. Resubmitting today so let's see what happens
This is just pure marketing......non gmo is associated with healthier food from the public perspective. Just remember, the companies that are selling you this s**t are huge companies as well, if you think that large companies are evil, yet these companies specifically have your best interest? I'm not sure how that logic works.
The facts: In the spring of 2016, The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) concluded, again, that GMOs are safe. Their study found β€œno substantial evidence of a difference in risks to human health between current commercially available genetically engineered crops and conventionally bred crops.” More than 20 scientists, researchers, agricultural and industry experts reviewed over 20 years of data since GMOs were introduced, including nearly 900 studies and publications, animal studies, allergenicity testing and North American and European health data and concluded that GMOs posed no risk to our health.
Netflixicoccus lol. Interesting notion, gene therapy has the potential to remedy rare diseases in a big way. The price/cost issue is a conversation within itself, but overall the field is expanding and companies are betting big on the technology. The fear of gene therapy has largely subsided in the industry. Mostly because of Spark Therapeutics landmark approval of Luxturna. Luxturna is a genetically modified virus that ferries a healthy gene into the eyes of patients born with retinal dystrophy, a rare condition that destroys cells in the retina needed for healthy vision. It's the first FDA approval of it's kind, and has opened the gates for everyone else.
Its almost hard to explain, but having a support system that's like family is arguable the best thing about my PhD. My doctorate has been hectic, I switched labs a year into my research because of a toxic situation, but I'm so glad a did. I have the mentor of legend I swear, a combination of take no s**t and 1000% supportive of your ambitions. This goes without mention to my lab mates, but the people on this photo saved me. Not only are they great friends, but they make me a better scientist. Please tag your lab family, and post a picture of the people that make your work life better. Work culture is SO IMPORTANT.
Today I had the opportunity to briefly speak on my research and education, at a 5K run for pancreatic cancer awareness and health Fair, organized by . I cant stress enough how important representation is! This organization does a excellent job at raising awareness for pancreatic cancer, especially in communities that need it the most. Great race, I finished 60th πŸ˜…πŸ˜…, the important thing is to get active for your community. Next time, I am aiming for top 20 lol. Shout out to for being a sponsor, as well as the Brody Lab!.
Challenges in STEM education summarized by two key, interrelated problems; (1) students often start but rarely complete their STEM degrees and (2) fewer still of those degree holders are women or people of color. Hispanics, African Americans and Native Americans make up 27% of the workforce, but only 11% of STEM workers.
This only isn't just a problem of socioeconomics and ethnicity, the entire US on average is underperforming in math and science. I am a scientist l, I am not an educator, so I'm interested in ideas that educators have to improve the situation. Please share your thoughts and data in the comments about the topics!!
I'm generally a calm person lol, but a few things can rub me the wrong way. Let me explain, philosophically, I don't care about how people live there lives, as long as they are not endangering others. Meaning, sexual preference, identity, polyamorous, white, black, green, religious or not, be a good person and I'm pretty much accepting of people's lifestyles.
What rubs me the wrong way is when people start transforming their beliefs into factual information. Example 1) People have the right to religious freedom in the US, but religion is a belief systems, so in SCHOOLS, were we teach science, belief systems shouldn't be taught as facts. Example 2) Robert Kennedy Jr. Made a claim that increased depression and anxiety in teens might be do to the Gardasil vaccine. This is the dumbest fu***ng thing I've ever heard, more importantly it's dangerous, because the HPV vaccine LITERALLY prevents most forms of cervical cancer, FACT.
Packaging beliefs as factual information can be dangerous, because it blurs the lines between critical thinking and deductive reasoning, and fantasy. So as the image says, Science doesn't care about your beliefs, just as math doesn't care about how you feel about algebra. It exists whether you agree with it or not. And if society is going to continue to move forward, we need to embrace thinking like a scientist, because it allows us to make decisions based on EVIDENCE, not beliefs.
Sci-Friends and followers!!! As most of you know or might know, my PhD focus is on creating novel therapies to treat Pancreas Cancer. It had the lowest 1 year survival amongst all cancers, and is expected to be the second leading cause of cancer death by 2030 (currently 3rd). I am challenging everyone to take a photo or video doing a handstand for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness, tag me in it!!! I will share the video or photo in my story, and at the end of the month make a giant photo collage of everyone that tagged me. Let's do something good and help fund a cure for this horrific disease! Most patients barely live 15 months, with treatment. The link for donation is in my Bio, any contribution is helpful to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Also please share the f**k out of this post!! Let's get inspired and involved!
One of the biggest issues we have in public discourse is that people value evidence differently. The first step to productive conversation is starting on a even playing field in regards to what we consider evidence. Science is not perfect, but if we want to talk about the problems that actually exist, we need to think about actual solutions that are based in evidence based reasoning.
Progress in cancer nanotechnology requires a better understanding of how molecularly targeted nanoparticles interact with live cells. Here, when cancer cells (cell nuclei in blue) were treated with antibody-conjugated nanoparticles, the antibodies (red) and the nanoparticle cores (green) separated into different cellular compartments.
