Join us for a hands-on collaging workshop, hosted by Miriam Saperstein!

Collage Social is a facilitated time for parallel play. We’ll get to know each other and warm up through some brief generative prompts, and then get into collaging with words and images. We’ll end with show and tell and hopefully leave with new friends and an openness to bringing play into poetry. Participants are encouraged to bring materials to share and cut up, and additional supplies will be provided (folks are encouraged to bring extra scissors and glue sticks!)

5 reasons to write indie book reviews (even if you aren’t a “big name” writer)

if you're a writer, extremely seasoned or just starting out, may i suggest considering writing a review of one (or a few) of the books on our shared doc (link below)? also, please feel free to add your info to the sheet if you're interested in having your book reviewed (or being interviewed)!

i came up with these 5 reasons for writers to write reviews indie books and send them to lit mags for publication, even if the reviewers aren't big name writers themselves, but i'm sure there a lot more reasons. can you comment some below?

#1: it’s good neighbor behavior. indie lit is a community. you know the term “literary citizenship?” part of being a good literary citizen is helping promote other literary citizens good work. we’re all in this together so let’s lift each other up!

#2: it’s a fun way to break out of your comfort zone. writing reviews means you get to put your critique hat on and write in a way that you might not be used to. it’s a good exercise to switch things up and see what develops!

#3: it gets your name out there. before i had any published books, i was writing reviews of new indie books (for fun), and getting them placed in online lit mags. it was a cool way to get in touch with writers i admired, as well as add some credentials to my c.v.

#4: it really does help the writers you’re reviewing. most indie writers can’t afford publicists, so any bit of promotion they get outside of their own efforts is incredibly beneficial!

#5: it’s a great feeling to recommend books you love to others. an angel gets its wings every time someone takes your advice and checks out that book you suggested to them!

Sadie Dupuis is the guitarist, songwriter & singer of rock band Speedy Ortiz, as well as the producer & multi-instrumentalist behind pop project Sad13. Sadie heads the record label Wax Nine, edits its poetry journal, and is a regular contributor to Spin, Tape Op, Talkhouse, and more. She holds an MFA in poetry from UMass Amherst, where she also taught writing. Mouthguard, her first book, was published in 2018 (Gramma); Cry Perfume, a second poetry collection, was released in 2022 (Black Ocean). She is an organizer with United Musicians & Allied Workers and its local UMAW Philly.
