Sinners hit theaters on April 18th, marking the 5th time actor Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler have teamed up.

Along for this deep psychological adventure includes newcomer Miles Caton, who the film’s POV is mostly seen from. Actress Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson from The Batman, Li Jun Li, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

This is not sparkle-in-the-sun vampires. These fangs come with receipts, rage, and real trauma. I think this article’s spoiler alert needs to be accompanied by a trigger warning.

Garlic and therapy are highly recommended. The film’s backdrop is Clarksdale, Mississippi, 1932. Before we go any further, we need to note, there are more than a few significant historic moments and hallmarks that took place in 1932, all of which played a role in creating this tapestry Coogler reimagined—especially for Black people.

First, 1932 is during the heart of the Great Depression and the Jim Crow era.

The Black church served as survival hubs for Black people. Miles Caton’s character, Sammie, is a gifted musician, a P.K. (Pastor’s Kid), and cousin to the twins, Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack” Moore, both played by Michael B. Jordan in the film.

The role and significance of the church is a main character in Sammie’s story.

In 1932, Duke Ellington’s music had the Cotton Clubs in a chokehold, and the Harlem Renaissance influence continued in a major way. The twins are the culmination of both of those influences mixed with the ambition to live beyond what the effects of the Great Depression were putting most Black communities under.
