"It's every jazz musician’s goal to play the Village Vanguard, and we get to do that every week. It's magic every Monday." Trombonist Douglas Purviance details the joys of playing with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra at the Village Vanguard every Monday evening, and the magic that Thad Jones brought to jazz. Listen to Purviance and the rest of the Vanguard in "Centennial: The Music of Thad Jones," now available for streaming and download on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Pandora and Deezer. For his new piece "Labyrinth," jazz composer Billy Childs took inspiration from puzzling artist M.C. Escher to create an intricate and somewhat disorienting piece that blends the traditions of jazz and classical music. Performed by the Temple University Studio Orchestra and led by conductor José Luis Dominguez, "Labyrinth" features Terell Strafford (trumpet) and Dick Oatts (saxophone) as soloists, and is now available for streaming and download on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, Pandora and Deezer.

Boyer’s newest recording, “COVID Sessions: A Social Call,” is available tomorrow! Preview the album at tujb.hearnow.com.

Following their January 2020 win of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s inaugural Jack Rudin Jazz Championship, the Temple University Jazz Band was poised to record a phenomenal album featuring a versatile array of big band tunes. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, these plans went out the window, but not for long. Thanks to the ingenious and pioneering work of Grammy and Emmy Award-winning recording engineer John Harris and Boyer College recording engineer David Pasbrig, this album was recorded entirely remotely, layering individual performances to create a groundbreaking big band album.

Our new BCM+D release, Constant Renaissance, features alto saxophone great Dick Oatts, also known as a distinguished Professor of Jazz here at Temple. Dick is featured as both leader and sideman on numerous albums, collaborating with such luminaries as Joe Lovano, Fred Hersch, Eddie Gomez, Tom Harell, Mel Lewis, Jon Faddis, Tito Puente and Jerry Bergonzi, as well as jazz vocalists from Joe Williams to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and many others. Vince Mendoza says “… to me he is a quintessential artist, improviser, soloist… you place him in the center of an ensemble and Dick is in charge. It was a great pleasure to have him in this orchestra because from the moment he stepped in, you knew that he belonged there.” Hear or buy Constant Renaissance at http://bit.ly/MendozaHearNow.
