Our first Bridging Blocks discussion of 2023 drew a crowd of neighbors and political candidates last night. State Representative and mayoral candidate Amen Brown, City Council At-Large candidates Mellisa Robinson and Drew Murray, and independent Rev. Nicholas O'Rouke were all in attendance as participants debated the place of ATVs and dirt bikes in Philadelphia.

Throughout the 90-minutes, there was visibly healthy tension and dialogue. Some argued that the only way to mitigate the public safety risk these ATV pose is by building a park to accommodate them. Others disagreed, noting the park wouldn't contain the culture. Public safety, noise complaints, and rolling street closures were also discussed.

Thank you to the the Lucien E. Blackwell Regional Library for hosting the event. Bridging Blocks is a civic engagement initiative between WHYY and The Free Library of Philadelphia that aims to bring together culturally and politically diverse households for conversation and understanding. Bridging Blocks is made possible by a generous grant from Fred and Barbara Sutherland.

Thank you Lloyd. ❤️

Sesame Workshop mourns the passing of our esteemed and beloved co-founder Lloyd N. Morrisett, PhD who died at the age of 93.

Lloyd leaves an outsized and indelible legacy among generations of children the world over, with Sesame Street only the most visible tribute to a lifetime of good work and lasting impact.

An experimental psychologist by training, Lloyd was a Vice President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York when he posed the question that would revolutionize children’s media: Could television be used to educate? In 1968, with fellow visionary Joan Ganz Cooney, he created Sesame Workshop, where the answer was proven to be a resounding “yes.”

Lloyd was a profound and invaluable guide for 30 years as Chairman of Sesame Workshop’s Board of Trustees, then Trustee and Chairman Emeritus and, finally, a Lifetime Honorary Trustee. He was fascinated by the power of technology and constantly thinking about new ways it could be used to educate.

We have been influenced by his passion, dedication, and firm belief in the transformative power of educational media. Lloyd’s presence will forever be felt in our halls, in our hearts, and in our work on behalf of children and families around the world. Joan Ganz Cooney, his co-founder and close friend, put it best. “Without Lloyd Morrisett, there would be no Sesame Street. It was he who first came up with the notion of using television to teach preschoolers basic skills, such as letters and numbers. He was a trusted partner and loyal friend to me for over fifty years, and he will be sorely missed.”

Ask the average person who's the most famous Philly boxer and they’ll probably say Rocky Balboa. But there was a real-life heavyweight champion who inspired the character. Joe Frazier is the one who actually ran up the Art Museum steps and boxed raw meat at a slaughterhouse.

Today, we’re going to tell the story of this champion. Who was Joe Frazier — as a fighter and a public figure? Where does his legacy live on in Philadelphia today? And why isn’t his statue as popular as Rocky’s?

It saddens us to share that Jerry Blavat, known around here as “The Geator with the Heater,” has passed away. Jerry was a disc jockey and a major icon in this city, who always had his finger on the pulse of Philly radio and performers. Closer to home, Jerry was part of the WHYY family and one of our greatest supporters. Our thoughts go out to his family.

Dirt bikes and ATVs are illegal to operate on city streets. But the 2021 ban on these vehicles, which gives police the power to confiscate, has done little to disappear them from the road.
While many view dirt bikes and ATVs as dangerous and disruptive, plenty others see “bike life” as a distinct urban culture worthy of celebration rather than cancellation.

Is this problem solvable?

You’re invited to join WHYY and the Lucien E. Blackwell West Philadelphia Regional Library on January 25 for a neighborhood discussion about the rules of the road and bike-life culture.

Filmmaker and lifelong Rocky fan André Robert Lee grew up in North Philadelphia, humming the theme song while shooting hoops. In his words, "I know pretzels, I know hoagies, and I know Rocky." But he'll also tell you that boxing legend Joe Frazier's historic gym on North Broad Street stands abandoned, with a lack of preservation or acknowledgement.

Statues are not neutral symbols. They are always about representation, identity, and power.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at University of Michigan welcomes former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.

Ahmad Haseeb Payab and his family fled the Taliban in Afghanistan in the middle of the night, catching a military convoy to the airport at 4 a.m. after receiving a call hours before.

They had never been to the U.S. Picking a place to live felt like throwing a dart at a big map. They needed to be somewhere close to a good children’s hospital. His daughter, Rahwa, has a serious heart condition that requires monitoring and treatment.

Then Haseeb thought of Rocky.

“Philadelphia was depicted in that movie. And then when I saw that and hear there’s a good hospital by the name of CHOP, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia….having that dream of Rocky, that motivated me…Rocky started from scratch. His exercise, his mission of becoming a champion. Now I am making everything from scratch, from zero.”

Hear more of Haseeb’s story in episode 1 of The Statue, our new podcast about the monument to the greatest Philadelphian who never lived.
