Repost:

This photograph from the 1920s shows Adelina Ruelas dressed as a vaquera (cowgirl) when she was 15 or 16 years old. She was working at a ranch in Box Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson.

Ranching was a strong tradition amongst many Mexican American families in southern Arizona, stretching back to the times before the Gadsden Purchase transferred this region from Mexico to the United States in 1853.
