The awesome Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31) and one of its satellite galaxies (M32). This is the closest major galaxy to our own galaxy at a distance of 2.5 million light years. It measures about 150,000 light years in diameter, similar to our Milkyway, and contains 1 trillion stars. The galaxy is actually moving towards us at almost 200 miles per second and is expected to collide with our galaxy in 4 billion years! The satellite galaxys are much smaller elliptical galaxies, although even the smaller one (M32) measure 6500 light years across. The galaxy is clearly visible with the naked eye under dark rural skies. I captured this from my dark sky location overnight while I was waiting to capture the comet.

Comet Lemmon soaring through space with a luminous, electric-blue ion tail swirling dramatically. The solar wind creates glowing plasma waves, making the tail shimmer with motion. The comet’s icy nucleus glows softly in green hues, set against a deep starfield. Cinematic lighting, 8K detail, astrophotography-meets-digital-art aesthetic

Comet Lemmon captured last night from the observatory! Its ion tail has brightened considerably, making it easier to capture some fast moving features in the comets tail!

Because the tail is brighter, I am able to stack fewer images to achieve the same level of signal. The fewer images captured in a shorter amount of time means less motion blur, or smearing of features.

It’s a bit rainy in Texas at the moment, so I will be out of comet action for tonight and tomorrow. But I’ll be back on it asap :)
