FAQ with Ri: What to Talk About with Your Videographer for a 1-Camera Shoot 🎥✨

💡 Why is center stage camera placement so common? (And when should you break this rule?)
💡 Are there key moments happening offstage, in the wings, or in unexpected spaces that we should plan for?

Thinking about these ahead of time can make the difference between capturing the magic… or missing it!

As dancers and choreographers, being an active participant in the storytelling process means we think critically about how we want our dance documented and communicate that vision of choreographic intent to the videographer.

How do we as dancers and videographers collaborate and communicate effectively to translate the vision from the medium of dance to the medium of film?

What does being an active participant in your storytelling process look like to you?

What are your priorities for what you want documented in your work?

At Dances With Tech, we think about the future, the past, and the present, and how documentation plays a role in archiving creative vision.

As videographers and filmmakers, what does it mean to an active participant in the storytelling process of documenting a dance piece?

We hear from dancers often that the footage filmed by a professional videographer who doesn't understand dance was beautiful...but...
- they missed the essence of the piece...
- or the person filming didn't know how to follow the action...
- or the person filming DIDN'T LISTEN to their creative vision
- or the person filming didn't respect the knowledge and artistry of the choreographer/dancer

At Dances With Tech, we understand dance as part of our own embodied practice. We know how to film dance because we KNOW dance. We think critically and comprehensively about performance and documentation.

We see the BIG PICTURE.
Notice TINY DETAILS.

And we believe that YOU deserve to be seen. Your Way.

Looking for a videographer to film your next performance, show, or event? Maybe you need some support in documenting your creative process? Or maybe you know how to film and need some help thinking through HOW to document your own work? We can help!

Happy Birthday to Dances With Tech founder Ri Lindegren!

"Being camera ready is hard work" and sometimes work can become play.

Like many of you, Ri struggles to be fully "seen" and show up as her full self in photos and videos. So here is to being seen, your way, in silly playful ways in any way that feels authentic to you!

Ri's bday wish?
"Notice the beauty or silliness of something in this moment around you. Share it."

Ri is taking a rest day somewhere in nature. She will return to filming, editing, and making fun social posts tomorrow.

And yes, we are fully embracing our 90's glitch aesthetic. Play your favorite '90's jam while watching this and remembering when gifs were a big deal.

Ri Lindegren here. I've been working with and team on Liz's creative projects, and Liz is asking really beautiful questions about legacy, and how we archive and represent our own legacy for future generations. In working as a videographer and educator at the intersections of performance and technology, I'm holding onto these questions as part of my own creative projects and in working with clients:

What do we want our audiences to remember from our work tomorrow?
In a year?
A decade?
At the end of our career?

And...I have many questions around this question of how do we film and document dance differently when we think of how we want it to represent our legacy?

What are you documentation challenges? How do you want your work to be remembered? Feel free to comment below or send me a DM.

I also wrote about it on the Dances With Tech blog and on LinkedIn:

Meet Ri Lindegren in a decade plus dance and film career flashback of the photos we could easily find...

Ri is the founder of Dances With Tech. She created it to offer high quality video documentation for the performing arts, specializing in two camera shoots of shows, events, and profile pieces.

Ri Lindegren
About

For a long time the only way you could catch Ri was in constant motion. She leaped across artistic, academic, and technological disciplines as a dancer, freelance videographer, gender studies nerd, arts administrator, and social justice advocate. In 2021 Ri received her M.F.A. in Dance & Interdisciplinary Digital Media & Performance (Arizona State University), where she taught courses on Intro to Dance, Modern Dance I, Yoga, and numerous dance and technology workshops.

Ri continued her 200 HR YTT education through the Resonance Yoga Mentorship Program with Jacoby Ballard. Ri is an Arizona State University Gammage Teaching Artist trained in the Kennedy Center Arts Integration method and enjoys leading age-specific and intergenerational opportunities for creativity, movement, play, and digital literacy in community and educational spaces.

Ri specializes in virtual and live embodied social somatic experiences across movement genres and building immersive physical spaces that support imagination and wellness.

When Ri isn't playing with technology or embracing the sacred pause of yoga, Ri can be found practicing Tap, House, Contemporary, and Contact Improv. Ri enjoys facilitating classes that are adapted to meet the needs of the students in the space, and seeks to support students in deepening their ability to listen and trust their own bodies.

Ri strives to develop classes that are accessible, trauma-informed, body-positive, culturally-aware, and rooted in the connection between breath, body, and mind.

Meet Dr. Crestcencia "CeCe" Ortiz-Barnett! Ri Lindegren and CeCe worked together in spring 2024 to document her research on imposter syndrome and sense of belonging in theater spaces, specifically for BIPOC students.

Notes from Ri:
"I loved filming this project because CeCe's passion for her work and her students shines through in everything she does. She is deeply loved and respected by her students and mentees. Her fierce love for inclusive and welcoming theater spaces and practices was beyond inspirational...her research and practice is vitally needed now more than ever. It was an honor to document and share her story."

"I filmed 4 interviews with faculty and staff, 2 student interviews, 1 class of CeCe facilitating/teaching, and compiled testimonial footage submitted from students she mentored or who could not be filmed in person. I edited three 10-minute videos she used in her MFA thesis presentation, and created many short videos for her website and socials from the content."

"Although filming dance is a passion of mine, many people don't know that I have a degree in cultural anthropology and experience with documentary filmmaking practices. I love interviewing people and creating profile pieces that highlight their work and what they are passionate about."

Learn more about Dr. Crestcencia Ortiz-Barnett's work:
"Being an ASU Gammage scholar affirms my research and sense of belonging for students of color at predominantly white institutions. And in predominantly white spaces. It affirms my own sense of belonging and the work that I do."

"I'm a non traditional theatre learner...I always felt like I didn't belong in the theater because I didn't know technical terms or the language or I wasn't a part of the crowd. And I know that I'm not the only person that feels that way...so I decided to research how we could better support students."

Days 2 & 3 of Dance Camera West film festival! Am I coming into or out of the making process? Planting seeds for new directions....

Co-creation labs led by the brilliant minds of and - we talked about the role of sound in dance films, practiced recording sounds to play with in editing, discussed visual anthropology and collaborative filmmaking practices, and the role of the storyteller/editor/writer.

Who is telling the story?
About whom?
Is it their story to tell?
How does place play into the story?
How can the director/choreographer/DP be a faciltator of collaging the film together in collaboration with the storyteller(s) in a way that supports the agency of those whose story it is?

Q&A shots from LA pops up. Check out this semi circle of LA dance film talent!!

Plus cool new collaborator friends like

First day of the festival in L.A.! Ri is excited to be here and take part in the co-creation dance filmmaking labs and of courseee to be inspired by all the incredible dance films and creative community.

Especially grateful this year to be in L.A. considering the devastation from the fires, and knowing that making and sharing art is a part of resilience, healing, and recovery.

FAQ #5: Will there be media or projections used in the show? Different cameras & camera technical abilities may or may not be able to provide a clear documentation of any media playing in the background. This may be why you see scanlines in the documentation video, or the media in the background seems washed out/super bright in contrast to the dancers on stage. More things to think about in the video!

FAQ #4: What happens with the lighting in your show? Sudden lighting shifts? Strobes? Blacklights? Bright colors? Lots of red or green tones? These are great things for the videographer to know in advance to have a better idea of how they can film specific parts of the show.

Something I didn't mention in the video but have talked about often with lighting designers is how live performance is lit for live performance, NOT for video. So ideal lighting for filming might be 10-20% BRIGHTER (in the dim lighting scenarios) than what is preferred for a live audience. This means the camera and lens has to have the technical capacity to do really well in low light to adequately capture the performance, or the video quality will be blurry and pixelated, and/or darker skin tones will not be as visible on screen.

FAQ #3: What does your videographer need to know about what's going to happen in the show? Do the performers break the 4th wall? Come off or onstage at any point not part of blackouts between pieces? What else happens? Flashing lights? Confetti? Unusual props? Give your videographer a heads up so they can document the show better.

FAQ #2: What kinds of shots do you need?
Most people have come to expect a wide static (nonmoving) shot of a show in rehearsals & performance documentation, but there is so much more you can do when documenting movement. Ri talks about what you need to know about tracking shots and more in today's FAQ.

Starting 2025 off with a media workshop for dance educators as part of Pink Tutu Flu for ! Excited to share (and exchange) ideas about the field of dance media and practice some embodied approaches to working with video.

I love facilitating workshops and bringing people together to play with dance/movement and tech! Let's work together to make dance filmmaking and the dance media field more creative and accessible. Send me a DM or email for more info.

Workshop description:
The Dance Media Workshop for dance educators to explore the cutting-edge field of media in dance. The workshop provides a quick overview of contemporary practices in Dance Media beyond video. The rest of the workshop delves into embodied and somatic approaches to working with video through hands-on practices using your phone camera (pro cameras are also welcome). Deepen your dance filmmaking skills through prompts and movement scores that connect body, breath, and intention, and explore ideas for how you could incorporate them into your teaching practice.

Coming into 2025 reminding you all to MAKE SPACE to PRACTICE your ART! It was a joy to get to play with a fancyyyyyy pro RED camera courtesy of the AZ Dance Experience with my colleague Rachel Delovino!

We ran away to a state park and practiced filming using this steadycam rig. I love learning new skills and getting nerdy with grounding into the earth and being aware and present in my body to initiate camera movement. Dancers make great cinematographers 🥰!

I even did a little dancing for the camera!

Keep playing with tech that intimidates you and don't be afraid to make mistakes! Dust off that camera and get to workkkkk.

More updates coming soon for 2025.

Stay grounded.

Check out Rachel's awesome work in cinedance! .cinedance
