I'm not allowed to wear my engagement ring to a friend's wedding. Not because it's flashy. Because of the color.
My fiancé's friends "Chelsea" and "Derek" are getting married next month. We've all hung out plenty over the years. They got engaged two years ago. We got engaged four months ago, on our seven year anniversary, in the middle of a bucket list trip. That becomes relevant, sadly.
My ring is a light blue sapphire. In photos it looks a lot darker than it does in person. That also becomes relevant.
Last weekend we met up with them for the first time since our engagement. They asked to see the ring. Chelsea said it's so much lighter in person than in the pictures. Derek agreed. Then, a little later, Chelsea asked if we remembered that the bridesmaids' dresses are a very pale blue. My fiancé knew, because he's a groomsman and he's wearing the matching tie.
Derek joked that they were hoping only the wedding party would wear that color, and that having a ring in that shade was "no excuse" for "breaking the rules." It was said as a joke. We laughed. I said not to worry, I'm wearing something dark anyway.
Then Chelsea said Derek was talking around the issue. And the issue, apparently, is that I cannot wear my engagement ring at their wedding, because it's too close to their shade of blue. She'd already told a family member she couldn't wear a necklace with similar colored stones, for the same reason.
Both my fiancé and I said asking me to leave my ring at home felt pretty strong. I've barely taken it off since he proposed. Their position: wearing it would be "creating drama," and if anything, it suggests I'm trying to steal focus from them and the wedding party.
I said I have zero intention of stealing focus, and that a one inch ring on my hand was not going to detract from a bride and groom standing at the end of an aisle.
Then came the part I still can't believe. They accused my fiancé of PROPOSING to me as a way to take attention away from them during their wedding timeline. He proposed on our seven year anniversary. On a trip we'd planned for a year. But sure. It was about them.
We left it at a stalemate. I expect one or both of us will be de-invited, which honestly, at this point, is no skin off my back. The only thing stopping me from shrugging it off is that my fiancé and Derek have been friends for over a decade, and it would genuinely hurt him to miss the wedding over something this trivial.
Am I wrong for refusing to take off my ring?
