I used to come home from school to find my dad working in his office and my mum [Tabitha King, another celebrated novelist] working in hers, so I just thought that was what you were meant to do,' he says. 'I thought you were meant to sit by yourself in a room and make up a bunch of stuff, then one day someone would pay you for it. And weirdly, that’s what happened.'”
