John Brawley ACS is a US based cinematographer who shot a number of camera tests on the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K full frame camera at the Four Aces Movie Ranch, north east of Los Angeles. John shot on a range of lenses, including Ziess cine primes, Atlas anamorphic and Sigma Art lenses. He also completed a number of anamorphic, low light and dynamic range tests on the new Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K in full frame.

“I had so much fun shooting with this camera, because it really opened up doors for me in terms of lenses. It was great to be able to use a lot of lenses that I probably wouldn't have thought of using, or that would have been too hard to use on a job.”

“The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is really a multi format camera being able to shoot 3:2 6048 x 4032 in 6K, 6:5 Anamorphic 4838 x 4032 and regular Super 35 4:3 4096 x 3072. If you're going for a certain look, then having that larger image circle of 43.18mm means that it works with so many lenses that are out there. Lenses that you’d have previously had to crop!”

“Of the scenes we shot, the hotel room setup was deliberately designed as a torture test for this camera to see exactly what this new sensor could handle in terms of dynamic range. It doesn’t get any harder than trying to balance the light from outside with inside, especially given we were shooting just after midday.”

“I didn’t use any active lighting for the shot, but I did use a 4x4 mirror for some extra shape. I never expected this camera to pass this test so well, as most cameras would really struggle with this sort of setup. You never know what you can get away with until you try, and the camera performed way better than I expected!”

“The girl at the diner scene was shot in anamorphic. This was the first time I had used the Mercury anamorphic lens and I found it to have a lot of personality and character. Because the image size of these anamorphic lenses perfectly fits the sensor’s larger image circle, that meant the field of view of the lens was exactly what you got in camera. This was quite a fast lens for an anamorphic at T 2.2. And if you get into a bit of trouble with your lighting, you can easily kick across to the second ISO range of 3200. For this shot we were shooting at T 2.8 and could easily get away with shooting at native ISO 400.”
