I would start off my checking if there are any maker spaces near you with a laser that you can use and get some experience with. Some schools also give access to their laser machines out of hours.

Check out Russ Sadlers video series, particularly The Concise RDWorks Learning Lab which will cover all you need to know about CO2 laser cutting and engraving machines.

Then you need to determine what you will be using the laser for and buy a suitable laser system. Don’t forget that fumes are the most dangerous risks and consider how you will vent, filter or extract those fumes.😍😍😍😘

The the huge amount of cargo produced in bulk or general cargo in containers, are stored in the loading ports. If the demand for specific cargo is high the transportation cost is very high and ship owner's profit, having a large number of ships, goes sky high.

05/11/2025

The reason depends on the demand of transportation of goods by ships worldwide. The types ships of ships dedicated to transport specific products such as genera cargo, , minerals, bauxite, grains, coal, etc in bulk, crud oil, fuel oil, chemicals etc., usually have a long time charter contracts.

Then there are your radars, which can be used for navigation as well as collision avoidance. Radars now have ARPA which plots vessels for you and gives you a vector in the direction of their travel, either true or relative to you.

And there is AIS, a radio signal that tells you a whole host of information about nearby vessels. If a vessel is equipped with AIS it will transmit what type of vessel, it's heading, speed, and destination. All of that displays on your chart plotter, making it easy to see what's going on around you.

05/09/2025

The COLREGS are a set of rules that spell out who has the right of way.

But as to HOW ships actually avoid collision, there are several tools we use. The first is a lookout, keeping an eye for anything on the horizon from a kayaker to an oil tanker.

Then there are running lights, a lighting configuration that displays what type of vessel you are approaching and which direction she's heading.

The USS Constitution is another example. It is kept around for the sake of being one of America's first fighting ships in the War of 1812 and is the 2nd longest serving vessel ever beside the HMS Victory, which is docked in the UK and was Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar.

I hope this is of some assistance in terms of answering why navies keep and maintain such ships.

Training, Tradition, and Commemoration.

The USCGC Eagle used to be the German training ship Horst Wessel built in the late 1930s. It was captured and the US won it at a post war raffle between the Allied victors. Ever since it has been a training ship for countless coast guard cadets and has made travels to sea-festivals and various ports representing the US.

Because they earn their money with transporting voluminous cargo. The more of the hull space they can devote to that, the better the economics. The engine room sits in the back to keep the propellor shaft short - saving space. The area above the engine is the perfect economical spot to put accommodation and bridge. Not always the most comfortable or convenient for the crew, but that matters less than money. Only if the visibility ahead becomes too constricted to meet classification regulations, the accommodation block gets put forward, as visible in large containerships. Only one 40ft bay worth, though.

05/07/2025

they are not quite as powerful as one might assume. On very large ships it often takes two or more tugs working together to swing the massive ship about. They also aren’t usually powerful enough to pull a large ship off a sandbar if it gets stuck. Another interesting fact is that they are being slowly retired as modern ships are increasingly built with small but powerful thruster motors built into their hull which allows them to maneuver in tight spaces without the need of a tug.

05/06/2025

Tugboats have unusually powerful engines for a vessel of their size, which is necessary to move large vessels. Of course, even the largest ships are basically just a mass of floating steel that can be pushed about by nearly any vessel. The problem comes in when the two vessels touch each other. It’s nearly impossible not to scratch or otherwise damage each ship’s hull, which is where the tugboat comes in. Not only is it small and powerful, but it has rubber bumpers affixed to its bow (and other possible points of contact on the hull) which allows it to contact another ship without damaging it.

05/05/2025

If by “big ships” you mean aircraft carriers, there are usually several other ships accompanying them. They are part of the battle group. They perform various functions from defense of the carrier from air, surface and subsurface threats to “plane guard”; that is they are designated and prepared to pick up any pilots, other aircrew, or even ship’s company that may find themselves in the water through various types of mishaps. There may be a supply vessel in the mix depending on the mission and location. On the other side of the coin, the carrier provides defense for the “small boys” via its aircraft. The carrier also provides fuel for the accompanying vessels, as well as mail and other supplies, some of which are flown in from various air fields. The carrier also provides airlift for crewmen, chaplains, and higher level medical care when needed. Overall, it’s a symbiotic relationship that allows for many types of missions.

05/05/2025

Doesn’t pay. While a large cargo ship uses more fuel it is economically because of the much greater ability to transport material. It is cheaper per ton than multiple small ships. Generally the crews of the large transporters are quite adept at negotiating the canals.. An “ incident” is relatively rare.
