An investigation is underway after a body was found near a submerged vehicle in Scottsdale on Saturday morning, authorities said.

Police responded to a call regarding a vehicle submerged in water at Vista Del Camino Park, near 77th and Roosevelt streets, at 7:40 p.m. on Friday, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.

Upon arrival, police and fire officials used drones and helicopters for a water rescue, but due to murky waters no signs of life were discovered. In addition, the inside of the vehicle was fully flooded with only the trunk visible above water, police said.

The Arizona animal cruelty legislation SB1658, better known as “Jerry’s Law,” officially went into effect on Friday, as was announced by a major Valley animal rescue.

Arizona Humane Society celebrated the law’s ceremonial signing by Gov. Katie Hobbs in early July at its Papago Park campus in Phoenix, which provides a clearer definition of animal cruelty and ensures appropriate medical care for companion pets, among other measures.

The law got its name from an animal cruelty case that occurred nearly two years ago which AHS dubbed “one of the most egregious … in recent Arizona history.” A dog named Jerry survived and was rescued, and the case became known as the Chandler 55.

Arizona State Senator Shawnna Bolick both sponsored and named the law.

In its Weekend Freeway Travel Advisory for Sept. 26-29, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) said that stretches of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway in Scottsdale and Loop 202 Santan Freeway in Chandler are scheduled to be closed over the weekend.

Due to rain in the forecast over the weekend, however, ADOT said closures could be delayed or postponed.

Republican state Rep. Matt Gress is condemning Tolleson Union High School District for allegedly refusing lawmakers’ request for financial transaction records.

“These are simple reports that you can run and produce them easily,” Gress told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Friday. “To me, it’s a flagrant attempt to distract the legislative oversight process.”

Gress submitted his request for two years of financial transaction records in late August. He said in a Thursday announcement that the district is now requesting around $26,000 for the electronic records.

The U.S. Department of Education is rolling back more than $250 million dollars in funding for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI).

An HSI is designated for universities where at least a quarter of undergraduate enrollment is Hispanic. Arizona has 20 HSIs, including Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona.

Once a college has its HSI designation, it can apply for federal funding to support Hispanic students.

On Sept. 10, the Department of Education announced $350 million dollars in funding to HSIs, among other programs, would be cut.
