ALMA and SPJ Phoenix invite you to hear Valeria Fernández, an Arizona journalist who this fall will receive the Society of Professional Journalists’ highest professional honor for extraordinary contributions to the profession. An award-winning multimedia journalist and documentary filmmaker, Fernández will speak about her life and work on August 21 at 6 p.m at Joy on 4th in Downtown Phoenix.

Fernández’s work amplifies the stories of immigrant and Latino communities in the United States. Based in Arizona, Fernández has reported for more than two decades on immigration, racial justice and human rights. Her reporting has appeared in outlets including CNN, PRI’s The World and The Guardian.

Another successful ALMA high school journalism workshop is in the books! Students spent the day participating in hands-on journalism experiences, including interviewing newsmakers during press conferences, competing in a news writing contest, and learning from media experts.

Thank you to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Helios Education Foundation and JPMorgan Chase for helping make the workshop possible.

It was an amazing opportunity for students to hear from the Governor’s Press Secretary Liliana Soto and the the marketing team from the Rafi Law Group! Both shared valuable insights and answered student questions for their writing piece in the ALMA journalism workshop. It was an exciting chance to learn directly from the experts!
