This year's NAHJ conference in New Orleans was one for the books. Congrats National Association of Hispanic Journalists for bringing together hundreds of talented journalists from across the country at all levels, from the smallest newsrooms to the biggest networks. We were inspired to hear from the passion we have for our profession and our industry. We were also humbled to hear the stories of colleagues facing challenges from layoffs in an industry we love. We learned, we laughed, we connected and we danced!

Your board members and represented ALMA as chapter leaders and are ready to bring back ideas, inspiration, connections and renewed passion to help our members in all stages of their careers.

Thank you for following along our journey.

Next year’s s NAHJ conference will be in Minneapolis 🎙🎉

“I don’t know why I was fired.” Cecilia Vega spoke at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Conference & Expo in New Orleans, after she was fired from CBS News’ 60 Minutes in May. She told attendees she knew she wanted this conference to be the place to open up about her experience. She called NAHJ members her “family,” many in the audience were previous bosses and colleagues, including ABC’s John Quinones, who interviewed her on stage.

Vega was the first Latina correspondent for 60 Minutes.

She said things started to change at 60 Minutes when during screenings of her stories by those involved in the standards process review, she and her team were encouraged to add elements that could not be verified. She provided some exeframples, including an instance during one of the screenings, where leadership wanted her to include footage of protesters attacking people in the streets during demonstrations related to ICE, in a story of the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Vega said her team could not confirm such instances existed.

Vega does now know yet what she will do next. ”I don’t have to know,” she said. “I’m going to take a break. I’ve been traveling, living out of a suitcase for the last 25 years.” Vega shared that her stitches “are still fresh.”

ALMA member Martha Maurer captured this video at the conference.
