In 2016, 12-year-old Sanford Harling III escaped a burning duplex in Norristown, Pennsylvania. When he realized his father, who had mobility issues, was still inside, Sanford went back into the burning home to try to save him. His father ultimately escaped through a second-story window, but Sanford never made it back out. He was later posthumously awarded the Carnegie Medal for his extraordinary heroism.

Andre Hill was visiting a friend when Columbus police responded to a non-emergency complaint about an unfamiliar vehicle. Officer Adam Coy encountered Hill as he emerged from a garage holding a cellphone and keys. Hill was unarmed, but Coy shot him four times. Coy was later convicted of murder, felonious assault, and reckless homicide and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
