FAQ

Q. What sort of submissions are you looking for? Anything we can put on print: poems, flash fiction, short essays, comics, illustrations, collages, etc. Please do not send sculptures. We'll also be making a digital zine, so send in songs, p

odcasts, audio stories, videos, GIFs, whatever we can't put on paper. Q. Who's allowed to submit? This is a zine for femme artists and writers. If you comfortably identify as a women, we want to hear from you! Who is Pity Party? Pity Party was created by Molly Bilker, Hattie Jean Hayes, Kim Koerth and Alex Scoville over Moroccan food in January 2016. The foursome are all journalism students at ASU and cry daily, at least. What is a sad girl? Are you a femme who cries over love gone wrong? Struggle with anxiety depression? Generally frustrated with the state of world, especially when it comes to women's rights? You may be a sad girl. What about Sad Girl Theory? Artist Audrey Wollen created Sad Girl Theory in 2013. "I think it's really important to recognise and foster an alternative to the hyper-positive demands of contemporary feminism right now. We've really fixated on loving ourselves - there's this ethos of excess and approval, making it cool and fun to be a girl. The problem is: it isn't really cool and fun to be a girl. It is an experience of brutal alienation and constant fear of violence. All the amazing parts of girlhood (of which there are many) are survival tactics that girls have created in the face of this reality. I want to stand with the girls who are miserable, who don't love their body, who cry on the bus on the way to work. I believe those girls have the power to cause real upheaval, to really change things."

"Yes, you can catch tweetstorms on Twitter, watch someone’s life unfold on Instagram, do deep dives into hashtags on Tumblr or watch video diaries on YouTube that explore diverse perspectives, but the clutter of everything else happening at the same time online can make it difficult to really digest and absorb the perspective being offered. Which might be part of the reason zines never disappeared — and are even available in abundance in 2017. "

Their resilience shows the limitations of the web as a place to nurture young creativity.

hello friends. we're putting together a special issue called Monologues. It's in partnership/conjunction with the Phoenix Va**na Monologues, but we're trying to focus on stories from voices that aren't usually highlighted in productions of the VM.

that means if you're a Black, Latina, Asian, or Native-American woman; if you're trans, or genderqueer, or agender, or nonbinary; if you live with chronic illness or a disability; if you're some combination of these--we want to highlight YOUR voice.

If you (or somebody you know!) identify with one or more of those groups and want to write about s*xuality, gender, body, violence, and healing, please message me for more info, or submit your writing to [email protected]!

Due first week of February. Anonymity is 100% welcomed. And if you don't want to submit but would want to lend your voice/guidance/thoughts, those are wanted and needed too!

pity party issue no. 2: digital sadness is out Saturday, just in time for WIZD's Grand Re-Opening Party. In it we explore our associated all-femme online group, told through the posts and threads made there (made 100% anonymous for this zine). What does an all-femme space look like? How can they be cultivated and maintained? How does it impact the lives of those in it?

available at local zine and book shops in Phoenix and through order online--contact a sad girl one-on-one or reach out to [email protected]
