CODE ORANGE AIR QUALITY ALERT ISSUED FOR SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATE ⚠️
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) has issued a Code Orange Ground Level Ozone Action Day for the Upstate region of South Carolina from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday.
According to SCDES, weather conditions are expected to create an environment favorable for elevated ozone levels. High pressure across the region will keep skies mostly clear, humidity relatively low, and winds light, allowing ozone pollution to build throughout the day while limiting the atmosphere's ability to disperse pollutants.
A Code Orange alert means air quality is forecast to reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and individuals with lung diseases such as asthma. Health officials recommend those individuals reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours when ozone concentrations are typically highest.
Officials also encourage residents to take steps to help reduce ozone pollution by limiting vehicle idling, walking or biking when possible, conserving energy, and ensuring vehicles are properly maintained.
Ground-level ozone is a harmful air pollutant formed when emissions from vehicles, industrial facilities, and other sources react with sunlight.
Residents can find additional air quality information through the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services and the EPA's AirNow program.
The air quality alert remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday.
