Dragon's Lair: Chronicles of Castle-Wide

Dragon's Lair: Chronicles of Castle-Wide Domestic pagan life from a wheelchair, in a single-wide that thinks it's a castle.

Hearth magic, spoonie cooking, and real life told a little bigger than the real world allows. πŸ²β˜•πŸ½οΈ

From the Castle grounds, where the leaves have officially turned.

This is the whole of the season, really: a chunky sweater, both hands around something warm, the fire going soft through the fog, and nowhere else to be.

The Castle doesn't hustle through the Ber months. It settles β€” afghans out of the cedar chest, heaters checked, soup pots considering their options, and every crow in the county asleep by sundown.

Cocoa first.

Everything else later. 🍫

And one question before it cools: which doorway should we open next? πŸ“š The Library with Grimm, 🍲 the Ember Kitchen with Hazel, πŸ‰ the Creature Grounds with Tobias, or πŸ•―οΈ the East Wing after dark? Cast your vote in the comments β€” the Castle is listening. πŸ‘‡

From the town archives, by way of the trail itself.

The old Pickens line was chartered on Christmas Eve, 1890, and ran eight miles between Easley and Pickens with no way to turn the engine β€” so it ran forward to Pickens and backward to Easley, looking, folks said, like a doodlebug. That's how the Doodle Trail got its name. (Its first revenue run derailed when local boys spiked the rails "to see what would happen." The line survived. The boys presumably did not try it twice.)

The rails are a walking trail now. But some nights, you hear it anyway.

The whistle where no train runs. The horn. The rattle of boxcars passing directly in front of you β€” gaps and all β€” with the trees moving as it goes by. A whole school bus heard it once, horn and everything, and never saw a single car.

Ask around Easley and the ghost-story lists already know: go to the downtown tracks at night, and you'll hear a whistle when there is no train coming.

Keeper heard it four times over the years β€” on the school bus, off Enon Church Road after a night shift, from Poinsett Circle, and every single night from the house she and Warden rented there. She'd step well off the track bed whenever she heard it coming.

No wreck. No tragedy anyone can name. Just a train that ran this line for a century and never quite stopped.

It just is.

From the Ember Kitchen: the Castle's answer to power wash spray.

We call it Embers Power Wash β€” 13 oz water, 2 oz blue dish soap, 1 oz rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Water goes in FIRST (ask us how we know), a gentle swirl, and the grime slides off with a single pass of the sponge. No heat, no standing over the sink β€” mixed entirely at seat height.

Recipe's above, straight from Hazel's household files. Save it for your next greasy pan. ✨

From the Castle grounds: our first Creature Encounter.

Tobias takes us into the Dragorse paddock β€” ninety degrees in the shade, if you can find any β€” with Scrap behind the camera and the whole herd in rare form. Eight scenes, one spectacular sneeze, and a stinger worth staying for. πŸ‰

Tonight's the Harvest Moon, and she's showing off. 🌝 September's full moon β€” the one that used to light the fields for harvest crews working late into the evening.

If you're running low on spoons like me, here's your whole full-moon ritual: step outside (or just look out the window), find her, and breathe with her for a minute. That's it. That's the magic. Some things don't need a filter.
Happy Harvest Moon, loves.

🍝 HEARTH DAY 🍝

Spaghetti day at Castle-Wide, and the sauce is going in the crockpot low and slow β€” because standing over a hot stove for an hour is a young woman's game, and I am neither young nor standing. πŸ˜„

Here's the crunchy truth the pretty cookbooks leave out: most of my cooking happens at wheelchair height, in stages, with rest breaks built in like they're ingredients. Sauce in the morning. Noodles at night. Sit down in between. That's not doing it wrong β€” that's the Spoonie Hearth System, and it puts dinner on the Great Table same as anyone's.

Hazel's hovering (as she does), Nell staged my chopping basket, and the whole Ember Kitchen already smells like garlic and tomatoes. Everybody eats at 11 β€” as always, everyone's welcome.

What's your low-spoon hero meal? The one you make when standing is optional? πŸ‘‡

The Castle garden after dark πŸŒ™πŸ…

The tomato vines are showing off tonight β€” green ones hanging heavy under the lanterns, just waiting on that first blush of red. Nell's already claimed half for sauce and the rest for eating standing right there in the dirt like a garden gremlin.

Real talk? We had no idea we even had tomatoes until today.

What's growing in your garden right now? πŸ’œ
