I finally made it out to the highest point in Chippewa County… and there’s an old lookout tower sitting up there in the woods.

It’s one of those U.P. spots I’d heard about but never actually went looking for until now.

Pretty cool little adventure, and definitely another one checked off the list.

Spent a little time exploring around Eckerman and found a couple places I’ve been wanting to check out.

First up was the highest point in Chippewa County, complete with an old lookout tower and survey marker.

Then I stopped at the old Eckerman Trout Rearing Station on the East Branch of the Tahquamenon River. There’s still a surprising amount left… old stonework, rearing channels, the bridge, and that little stone building sitting back in the woods.

I’ve been digging into the history of the trout station too, and there’s a lot more to this place than I expected.

Well… I guess it’s time to finally let everybody know.

Yooper Outdoors has its own website!

There’s already a bunch to explore… waterfalls, hikes, fishing spots, hidden gems, roadside stops, U.P. history and more.

The site is already up and running and there’s plenty to check out now, but I’m definitely not done with it.

I’ll be adding more articles, photos and adventures, and I’m working behind the scenes on some bigger features too.

This is just the beginning.

There’s a lot more hiding behind this old church on Sugar Island than I expected!

Holy Angels Church dates back to the 1850s, but behind it a trail leads through the woods to the old Holy Angels Cemetery. And if you keep exploring, another little trail takes you over to the Baraga Tree.

Come along as we check out the church, walk back to the cemetery, and see what else is hiding in the woods around this old Sugar Island settlement.

Found another really cool piece of Sugar Island history!

This is Holy Angels Church in the old Payment Settlement. The church was built way back in 1856 and 1857 and is still standing today!

But the church isn’t the only cool thing here. There’s a trail that heads back through the woods to the old Holy Angels Cemetery, and another little trail takes you over to the Baraga Tree.

I had no idea all of this was hiding back here on Sugar Island!

Definitely a really cool place to explore and learn a little more about the history of the island.

Hidden about 0.6 miles back in the woods, the Miners River drops roughly 50 feet over a sandstone ledge, creating what the National Park Service calls the most powerful waterfall in Pictured Rocks.

You can hear her roaring through the trees before you ever catch that first glimpse…. and once you reach the (lower) overlook, she definitely doesn’t disappoint! Come along for the hike as we check out one of the coolest waterfalls in the U.P.

Tucked away at the far end of Miners Beach, Elliot Falls flows right out over the sandstone and into Lake Superior. She wasn’t exactly raging when I visited…. more like a steady trickle.

Still, between the beach, the cliffs and all the kayakers out on the big lake, you really can’t beat the location. Come along as we take the short hike down and check it out!

Made a quick trip to Pictured Rocks after work and checked out two completely different waterfalls!

We started at Miners Falls, what they call the most powerful waterfall in Pictured Rocks, and finished at Elliot Falls, which might just be the least powerful. Still a pretty cool little hidden gem, though!

I stopped by the museum while I was over on Drummond Island, and this place has way more inside than I could fit into one video! From the old Seaman homestead and island ferries to farming, logging and the Johnswood ghost town, there’s a lot of local history packed in here.

If you’re ever on Drummond, it’s definitely worth stopping in and exploring for yourself!

Made a stop at the Drummond Island Historical Museum while I was over on the island, and this little place is packed with history!

They’ve got everything from old farming and logging equipment to a horse and buggy, a 1903 Edison phonograph, and even some history on the old Johnswood ghost town. There was a lot more in there than I was expecting.

Definitely worth stopping in and checking out if you’re ever on Drummond Island!
