What is Hip Hop Soul?
Hip hop soul is the blending of the essence of soul music in the genre of hip hop. Soul music is rooted in negro spirituals, to gospel music the blues, to the spirit and emotional struggle of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement on into the Black Power/Liberation Struggle in the 1970s. Soul music started to define itself around the 1950s and has shaped Afrikan American popular music for decades. So Hip Hop Soul is tapping into the soul of our greatest musical ancestors, and bringing forth a sound and lyrics that channel the best of who and what we are as a people. We are the modern day griots.
