Nicolaysen Art Museum to recognize Pinedale artist David Klarén with Tom West Award

CASPER — Sublette County’s own David Klarén was named this year’s Tom West Award recipient by the The Nicolaysen Art Museum (NIC) in Casper. He will be recognized for his contributions to the museum and art community during the NIC’s 41st annual fundraiser, the Canvas of Curiosities Gala on Friday, Sept. 11. Klarén, who owns Mystery Print Gallery and Frame in Pinedale, has “long been a pillar of Wyoming’s art community, helping artists throughout the state create group exhibitions and collaborations,” according to a NIC announcement.
For Klarén, who learned of the award about a month before it became public, the news was a total shock. “I don’t really do what I do to get awards. I prefer to be here in my studio instead of standing in front of a bunch of people, so I was surprised,” Klarén told the Roundup inside Mystery Print Gallery on August 25. “Whatever I do, there’s a lot of people behind me,” he added. “I’ve always had good support.”

ICYMI: SCSD1 celebrates grand opening of career-tech center

PINEDALE — In an effort to prepare students for life after high school, Sublette County School Dist #1 has opened the county’s first Career Technical Education facility. Students are expected to start arriving next week. The facility will offer several classes to high school students, with completion granting the students certifications. “The boards had this goal for a long time to provide more career tech opportunities for our kids,” said superintendent Shannon Harris. “We’re just super excited to be opening it and have some new opportunities and improve opportunities that we do have.”

The CTE currently offers five classes: agriculture, welding, construction, auto mechanics, and culinary arts. Nursing will be introduced in early 2027. “The problem is getting a teacher,” Harris said of the delay. The classes were designed with help from local businesses so the school could provide students with certifications necessary in the community. “We really want to give opportunities to kids no matter their interests,” Harris said. Classes will also be offered to adults through Sublette BOCES - Pinedale.

LANDER – The Sublette County combined girls’ swim team opened the 2026 season with a successful showing at back-to-back events in Lander over the weekend.

On Friday, August 28, the swim team attacked the Lander Relays with Sublette County finishing fifth overall at 175 points. The event featured individual events as well as relays.

Sublette County dove back into the pool on Saturday for the Bruce Gresly Pentathlon, also in Lander. In order to make the final placings, swimmers were required to complete five individual events – the 100-butterfly, 100-backstroke, 50-freestyle, 100-breaststroke and 100-freestyle.

Six swimmers from Sublette County punched their tickets to state with prequalifying times at either event.

Lady Wranglers 3-1 at Lander Invite

LANDER – The Pinedale Lady Wranglers attended the Lander Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29. The tournament showcased Pinedale’s resilience and net power across four matches.

The Lady Wranglers overcame scrappy defensive teams and potent front-row attackers to defeat Shoshoni, Big Piney and Thermopolis while falling to new 3A opponent Tongue River.

Lady Punchers battle at Lander Invite

LANDER – The Big Piney Punchers opened their season with a weekend full of competitive volleyball at the Lander Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29. Big Piney earned a win over Farson while dropping close matches to Lander, Worland and Pinedale.

Big Piney defeated Farson in the first game before facing three tough opponents in back-to-back matches. The Punchers fell to Lander in four sets and dropped three-set matches to both Worland and Pinedale.

Although the final record was not the outcome the team was hoping for, the scores were close and the level of competition showed just how much fight this Puncher team has early in the season.

Senior leaders Jada Banks and Myka Wicks picked up right where they left off in 2025, leading the Punchers on the court and setting the tone for the team. Both seniors showed strong leadership and helped keep the team focused and competitive throughout the weekend.

ICYMI: Ranch manager charged with stealing cows, hundreds of thousands of dollars

CORA — A former ranch manager is charged with 11 counts of theft of more than $275,855, plus 57 head of cattle, gravel, stalls and a square bale stacker stemming from his time working on a Cora ranch. Robert “Bob” James Griffith, 58, of Pavillion, Wyo., was employed as the ranch manager at the Twin Eagle Ranch from 2014 through October 2023. He faces up to 110 years in prison and $110,000 in fines if convicted on all felony counts. Sublette County Circuit Court Judge John LaBuda initially set Griffith’s bail at $5 million, but later modified it to $50,000 cash, which Griffith posted. He’s since been released from the Sublette County Detention Center and his case was bound over to Sublette County District Court on August 25.

Man and dog go missing in Wind River Mountain Range

PINEDALE — Jonathan Bailey and his yellow Labrador retriever, Wrigley, are missing somewhere between 1000 Island Lake and Elkhart Trailhead in the Wind River Mountain Range north of Pinedale. Bailey has with him a black backpack and was wearing a yellow Wyoming baseball hat. Wrigley, the lab, should be wearing a red pack.
