On multi-day rock climbing ascents, climbers sleep on the side of the cliff using portable platforms called portaledges. These are collapsible, tent-like structures made with a metal frame and durable fabric, which are suspended from anchors drilled into the rock face. After a day of climbing, climbers set up their portaledge, usually in a relatively sheltered spot if possible, and secure themselves to it with harnesses and safety ropes. They sleep in sleeping bags and often use a waterproof fly or cover to protect against wind, rain, or falling debris. Meals are prepared with small portable stoves, and waste is packed out in special containers. Though it might seem precarious, experienced climbers are well-practiced in the setup and safety procedures, making these vertical campsites both functional and safe.
