This month, we are celebrating 3οΈβ£0οΈβ£ years of service!
In January 1996, David P. Hurford approached then-president of Pittsburg State University about developing a dyslexia center. Dr. Hurford had been researching how to accurately evaluate reading difficulties in early elementary students and provide remediation with success. More students deserved access to high-quality identification and intervention techniques, and Dr. Hurford knew it was possible.
Dr. Hurford envisioned a place where research could be conducted and shared to advance the field, reading and attentional difficulties could be identified early, and evidence-based reading intervention services made available to those who needed it. The president agreed, and our university-based center for the research, assessment, and remediation of reading difficulties was born.
Since that time, thousands of individuals and their families from around the world have visited our office to receive evaluation and intervention services. Dr. Hurford developed additional assessment tools, intervention protocols, and literacy curricula which are used in schools around the world and serve as the basis for our summer literacy programming. We have conducted research, published papers, and offered countless trainings to help advance the Science of Reading and raise awareness of dyslexia and issues related to it. It has been an honor.
Please join us as we celebrate this milestone and look forward to the next 30 yearsβand beyond! π
