The Pittsburgh Pirates are still looking to add another impact hitter to their lineup.

“We’d like to add another let’s say proven bat somewhere on the roster whether that’s outfield, whether that’s corner infield or whether that’s DH,” general manager Ben Cherington said via Zoom. “I think we just got to keep working it and pursuing all the angles.”

The offense already received a clear upgrade in Lowe, who hit 31 home runs and was an All-Star for the Rays in 2025.

“The fact that [Lowe] can play second, we believe, also keeps options open for us to add another bat in another spot,” said Cherington.

Friday The Pittsburgh Pirates designated infielder Tsung-Che Cheng and outfielder Marco Luciano for assignment.

Cheng made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2025 and went hitless in seven at-bats across three games.

The Pirates claimed Luciano off waivers from the San Francisco Giants earlier in the offseason. Luciano is former top prospect who has yet to carve out a role in the majors.

ANALYZING PIRATES TRADE

The Pittsburgh Pirates have pulled off their biggest trade of the Ben Cherington era. Brandon Lowe’s 31 home runs were over a quarter of the Pirates’ output as a team this past season. The Pirates also received Jake Mangum, and Mason Montgomery...Mangum is an outfielder who hit a worthy .296 average last year and Montgomery is a promising 25-year-old lefty reliever..

The Pirates had to part with Mike Burrows, a promising young starting pitcher which stings. But given that Pittsburgh has a plethora of young starting pitchers at or near the Major League level and considering Burrows’ injury history, trading him was worth landing three players capable of impacting the 26-man roster.

Kyle Nicolas shuffled between Pittsburgh and Triple-A Indianapolis like a deck of cards in 2025. The right-hander was recalled three separate times and totaled 31 appearances with the Pirates.

Nicolas finished his third big-league season 1-2 with a 4.74 ERA. In 38 innings he allowed 34 hits, walked 18 and struck out 34 batters.

Over his final 15 appearances of the season, Nicolas was only charged with four earned runs — all of which came in two-thirds of an inning against the Nationals in Washington on Sep 12.

REPORT: PIRATES EXPLORING OZUNA

A new report from Ken Rosenthal is very juicy for Pittsburgh Pirates fans, suggesting specific interest in players, most notable being Marcell Ozuna.

Perhaps the more interesting part was Rosenthal suggesting that trades are the way to go for Pittsburgh. They were already rejected by Kyle Schwarber, and it may happen again, mostly due to the lack of winning in recent years.

"Already, one person in the industry has created a term for a Pittsburgh club that might keep finishing as runners-up: “Pirates-maids.”

Last offseason, the Pirates swung a trade with the Boston Red Sox to land infielder Enmanuel Valdez from the Boston Red Sox for minor-league pitcher Joe Vogatsky.

Prior to the trade, Valdez totaled 125 games with the Red Sox in which he slashed .235/.286/.400 with 20 doubles, 12 home runs and 47 RBI.

Valdez didn’t break camp as part of the Pirates’ active roster but quickly joined the big-league club after Opening Day when Nick Gonzales landed on the injured list with a fractured ankle.

He quickly carved out a regular role as the Pirates’ starting first baseman. He appeared in 31 games over the next several weeks and slashed .209/.294/.363 with four doubles, two triples, two home runs and 12 RBI.

But Valdez’s season was cut after requiring surgery on a dislocated left shoulder in May.

One of the first roster moves the Pirates made this offseason was adding right-handed pitching prospect Ryan Harbin to the 40-man roster.

Splitting the 2025 season between three levels, Harbin made appearances with High-A Greensboro (2-2, 2.37 ERA, 46 K, 30.1 IP), Double-A Altoona (1-1, 3.66 ERA, 31 K, 19.2 IP), and Triple-A Indianapolis (1-1, 11.48 ERA, 15 K, 13.1 IP).

He’s totaled six seasons in the organization and is 7-14 with a 4.74 ERA and 12 saves. In 201.1 innings, he’s walked 130 batters and has struck out 264.

The expectations were raised for 2020 first round draft pick Nick Gonzales heading into the 2025 season.

The Pirates named Gonzales their starting second baseman for Opening Day this past season in Miami.

He homered in the first game of the season but hobbled around the bases and was placed on the injured list the following day with an ankle fracture.

The injury kept Gonzales out of action until early June, and while he hit .308 with an .835 OPS through early July, he struggled over the last three months of the season.

Gonzales slashed a lowly .242/.278/.318 through the final 69 games of the season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are one of the teams expressing interest in Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., according to Francys Romero on Twitter/X.

After being named an American League All-Star for the first time in 2023, Robert had his second straight subpar season for the White Sox in 2025.

The 28-year-old slashed just .223/.297/.364 with 12 doubles, 14 home runs and 53 RBI in 100 games.

Robert is owed $20 million this coming seasons and has a club option valued at $20 million again for 2027 with a $2 million buyout.

For most of his career, Bryan Reynolds had consistently been the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top offensive performer.

But Reynolds’ underwhelming performance in 2025 reflected the team’s offensive output as a whole.

Reynolds dealt with a a triceps injury early in the season which relegated him to strictly designated hitter duties.

Once he returned to his position in right field, Reynolds provided solid defense but his offense remained lackluster.

He slashed .245/.318/.402, and while he set a career-high with 38 doubles, his 16 home runs were the fewest he’s hit in a full season and his 73 RBI was his lowest total since 2022.
