SPACE ELEVATOR — A story of technology and human pursuits…I wrote this song with as a metaphor of technological challenges humans strive to overcome, and the blinding speed and chaos that comes from breaking the limits too fast.
We wrote this song as an experience from the ground floor up; your elevator rising through the sky, breaking through the atmosphere, reaching an orbital launch station, and then careening off the rails out of the solar system into lightspeed chaos. It’s reminiscent of the story of any new technology and its effect on humanity—where the first invention of new technology creates a cascade of chaos as humans race to exploit and expand upon it.
There is a moment, though, as the change happens, where the experimentation and limit breaking goes too far. Space Elevator never slows down, it escapes all limits and flies haphazardly into the calamity of space.
I see Space Elevator as a commentary on development of artificial intelligence, where people are so concerned with whether they “could” that nobody stopped to think whether they “should” before it gets too late. Breakthrough technology is as exciting as it is dangerous, and the adverse effects can’t be an afterthought.
A little on the visuals—as with this whole forthcoming body of work (yes, you heard that right 😜), I decided to pursue a visual style that only used practical effects to achieve my vision. This cover, like the other singles so far, was designed using physical light effects and shutter drag, and shot by the amazing , who has done all of my forthcoming work’s cover arts. We hung a flashlight with a ball taped to the end from a ceiling fan, turned on the flashlight and ceiling fan for just a moment, and then recorded the orbiting light with a single flash that could sharpen the image.
Like everything, creating the visual and committing to doing this project “right by me” so to speak (no AI usage) was very difficult to pull off, and forced me to think in an entirely analogically way. The algorithm is not rewarding of this idea, so I appreciate anyone who has helped share this music! So excited to reveal more 🚀
