The Thomas Merton Center Board of Directors has voted to temporarily suspend publication of The NewPeople newspaper, as of September 21, 2020.
Given current work developing a strategic plan that will guide future implementation of the Center’s mission, and how the pandemic has severely limited distribution of the paper beyond our membership, the Board decided the moment was right for rethinking The NewPeople’s overall purpose, forms of publication and distribution, nature of content, and organization of the labor needed to produce a quality publication.
In coming months staff, board members, and volunteers will address a number of challenges faced by The NewPeople, including the need to grow our audience, increase unique, impactful content, integrate the newspaper with the Center’s other activities, and recruit and retain a diverse group of volunteers capable of maintaining production and distribution.
The NewPeople has a long and often illustrious history of informing and energizing Pittsburgh’s activist communities. During that history the publication has mutated in ways that have reflected the Thomas Merton Center’s evolving mission, concerns, and resources.
The Center’s Board regards the current pause in publication as one step among many intended to ensure our organization’s future effectiveness as a relevant voice for peace, equity, and social justice in western Pennsylvania.
