Former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark doesn’t believe Tomlin’s successor will be able to pick up where he left off.

“I think, right now, Omar Khan, the general manager, and Art Rooney Jr. are gonna make the most important decision that’s been made for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 20 years,” Clark said on “Inside the NFL.” “I mean, this team doesn’t miss on head coach hirings — Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin. They haven’t had to make this decision but three times since the late 60s. That’s how good they’ve been at picking or making this choice.

“I’m afraid it’s gonna be a total rebuild. This isn’t gonna be another year where you get to fight your way into the playoffs with a roster that shouldn’t be there. You probably won’t have that type of coach. You won’t have that type of roster.”

Pittsburgh Steelers legend James Harrison did not hold back on Mike Tomlin in a recent rant on his Deebo & Joe podcast.

Harrison, who is an often critic of Tomlin, thinks his former head coach was a good coach but not elite.

That’s why he believes Tomlin does not belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“I can’t give him a Hall of Fame coach because he hasn’t made disciples,” Harrison said. “You’re telling me you’re a Hall of Fame coach, but no one has followed you? That can’t be the thing. He’s the only coach that has coached this long and does not have a tree. Guys are emotionally attached to him, not performance.

“A great coach, the measurement of greatness, it’s not based on personal experiences and relationships you’ve had with them. It is purely what you did as a coach. Did you get championships? Did you build disciples? Wins and losses is great, but those wins and losses have to add up to championships. A Hall of Fame coach should be making history for having the longest losing streak in playoff history.”

ENTIRE COACHING STAFF IN PITTSBURGH GONE

After Mike Tomlin's resignation on Tuesday, many were wondering what was to come with the rest of the coaches under contract with the Steelers. Now, we know...

“The Steelers have told all of Mike Tomlin’s assistant coaches they are free to pursue other opportunities and won’t be retained unless the new head coach wants to rehire them, per multiple sources,” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Steelers reporter Gerry Dulac wrote Thursday on X. “All coaches are under contract through the end of February.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers requested to interview two more for their open head coach position on Thursday.

The Steelers have requested to speak with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

Evero just recently received an extension from the Panthers. Carolina’s defense took massive steps forward in 2025. The unit allowed 327.2 total yards (16th) and 22.4 points (15th) per game in 2025, a drastic change from the 404.5 yards (32nd) and 31.4 points (32nd) they gave up in 2024.

Hafley completed an interview with the Dolphins for their head coaching vacancy on Tuesday. He’s the betting favorite to land the Miami job.

Hafley was the head coach at Boston College for four seasons (2020-23), leading the Eagles to bowl eligibility in three of the four years. Hafley has been the Packers’ defensive coordinator for the last two seasons.

Art Rooney II made many interesting remarks on Wednesday when he took the podium. He spoke on the departure of Mike Tomlin, and how the organization will go about hiring the next head coach.

Of note, the team president revealed that they've basically already ruled out hiring anyone on the current staff as the head coach, including OC Arthur Smith.

“Right now, I don’t think anybody on our staff is a candidate...Maybe a candidate to stay on the staff depending on what the new head coach wants to do, but probably not as a head coach.”

Rooney then added to his remarks that he wasn't firing the long time head coach, "I was certainly willing to take another run at it next year with Mike."

And that, "it was probably a family-related decision more than it was a football related decision."

Pittsburgh Steelers principal owner, and team president Art Rooney II held a press conference today following Coach Mike Tomlin's resignation from yesterday. Rooney said that he and Omar Khan will lead the search for a new Head Coach.

When asked about the timeline, Rooney cautioned, “I don’t want to put an exact timeframe on it,” he said. “We’ll get started right away. It will take weeks, at least, I would say. Nowadays, there are number of protocols we have to follow that are sort of designed to slow the process down.”

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has informed the team that he is stepping down as head coach after 19 season with the team, according to a report by ESPN.

Tomlin has engineered 19 consecutive winning seasons as head coach of the Steelers, but also failed to transform that into postseason success later in his career. The team’s 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night was the club’s seventh consecutive postseason loss under Tomlin and the team did not win a playoff game in his final nine seasons.

“It’s the here and now, and certainly it’s difficult,” Tomlin said about his emotions following the loss. “But that’s what we sign up for. That’s the life we live.”

Asked about his future on Monday night, he said he was “not a big-picture mentality as I sit here tonight.”

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers strongly backed his head coach Mike Tomlin after Monday night’s 30-6 playoff loss to the Houston Texans.

Rodgers thinks it’s a joke that people are calling for Tomlin’s job.

“When I first got in the league, there wouldn’t be conversation about whether those guys were on the hot seat,” Rodgers said, who added his former Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur to the conversation. “But the way that the league is covered now and the way that there’s snap decisions and the validity given to the Twitter experts and all the experts on TV now who make it seem like they know what the hell they’re talking about, to me that’s an absolute joke.

“For either of those two guys to be on the hot seat is really apropos of where we’re at as a society and as a league because obviously Matt has done a lot of great things in Green Bay, and we had a lot of success. Mike T. has had more success than damn near anybody in the league for the last 19, 20 years. More than that, though, when you have the right guy and the culture is right, you don’t think about making a change.

“But there’s a lot of pressure that comes from the outside, and obviously that sways decisions from time to time,” Rodgers continued. “But that’s not how I would do things and not how the league used to be.”
