π¨ ICE ACTIVITY: Immigration enforcement agents on Wednesday patrolled Beechview, one of the city's few Latino neighborhoods, according to immigration advocacy group Casa San JosΓ©.
π CONTEXT: ICE is looking to expand its footprint in Pittsburgh as immigration arrests surge nationally.
π DETAILS: Agents in unmarked black SUVs were seen from about 8:30-10:30am on Broadway Avenue and other side streets, including near Latin grocery store Las Palmas. No arrests were made Wednesday, according to Casa San JosΓ© director Monica Ruiz.
π ZOOM IN: Agents were also in Beechview Tuesday and had a tense standoff with the owners of Las Palmas, according to Public Source. Four men were detained at Mexican SazΓ³n Lichita restaurant in Beechview last week, Ruiz says.
π¬ WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "This feels like we are being attacked," Ruiz says. "These are innocent people who are trying to go to work and go shopping."
π BY THE NUMBERS: ICE made 358 arrests in the Pittsburgh area in January and February, according to KDKA. The agency made nearly 50,000 arrests nationally in July, NPR reported.
β‘οΈ WHAT'S NEXT: ICE is proposing mobile detention centers in Pittsburgh and a Pittsburgh-area "hub" to hold people overnight before transporting them to longer-term facilities.
