🚨 ICE ACTIVITY: Immigration enforcement agents on Wednesday patrolled Beechview, one of the city's few Latino neighborhoods, according to immigration advocacy group Casa San José.

📈 CONTEXT: ICE is looking to expand its footprint in Pittsburgh as immigration arrests surge nationally.

📍 DETAILS: Agents in unmarked black SUVs were seen from about 8:30-10:30am on Broadway Avenue and other side streets, including near Latin grocery store Las Palmas. No arrests were made Wednesday, according to Casa San José director Monica Ruiz.

🔎 ZOOM IN: Agents were also in Beechview Tuesday and had a tense standoff with the owners of Las Palmas, according to Public Source. Four men were detained at Mexican Sazón Lichita restaurant in Beechview last week, Ruiz says.

💬 WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "This feels like we are being attacked," Ruiz says. "These are innocent people who are trying to go to work and go shopping."

📊 BY THE NUMBERS: ICE made 358 arrests in the Pittsburgh area in January and February, according to KDKA. The agency made nearly 50,000 arrests nationally in July, NPR reported.

➡️ WHAT'S NEXT: ICE is proposing mobile detention centers in Pittsburgh and a Pittsburgh-area "hub" to hold people overnight before transporting them to longer-term facilities.

🕵️ MYSTERY RESTAURANT: Did Pittsburgh ever have a Rainforest Cafe?

💡 WHY IT MATTERS: What seemed like an easy question turned into a lesson how to best to use AI, and how to report local lore versus fact.

🔍 CONTEXT: After spotting misinformation on Google claiming a Rainforest Cafe existed Downtown in the late '90s, we dug deeper.

🗞️ ZOOM IN: The investigation included calls to past officials, reader surveys, and newspaper archives. Some readers said they remembered one and others didn't, adding to the mystery.

🧑‍⚖️ THE VERDICT: Meghan Bailey, a spokesperson for the restaurant's owner, confirmed Pittsburgh never had one.

💬 WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "Overall, I think we can put Pittsburgh's Rainforest Cafe in the Mandela effect category," said Heinz History Center's Lauryn Nania, referencing the phenomenon where similar false memories are shared.

💡 SOCIAL MEDIA STUNT: Pittsburgh’s beloved "Star Wars" vending machine was taken by Braeden Days and is ultimately safe, but that didn't stop the local outrage.

💬 WHY IT MATTERS: Critics say the stunt ruined what made the machine special: its authenticity. The machine went viral because it had sat unchanged for more than a decade and felt locked in time.

📍 CONTEXT: The 1999 Pepsi machine sits outside Fire Station 27 on Mt. Washington and has become a tourist destination after gaining popularity online several years ago.

🎥 ZOOM IN: Days revealed he took the machine and replaced it with an artistic version in an Instagram post, then deleted that post and later posted a video explaining himself, stating the machine had been broken for years and claiming he has "full permission from the owners" to repair it.

💭 WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Local radio host Mikey Dougherty said, "For people to be in the dark, it’s like you took a piece of Pittsburgh, replaced it with a sh*ttier version. It seemed unnecessary to stress a lot of people out."

💉 VACCINE DEBATE: Gov. Josh Shapiro and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are fighting over two measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County.

🔍 WHY IT MATTERS: Both individuals were unvaccinated, one was a newborn whose mother was also unvaccinated, prompting discussions about vaccine misinformation.

🔬 THE LATEST: Kennedy alleged Shapiro’s office did not provide CDC details about the deaths and he is questioning Pennsylvania's designation that the deaths were measles-associated.

📞 ZOOM IN: Shapiro said he had a "blunt" phone call with Kennedy, accusing him of spreading vaccine misinformation and urging him to support vaccines.

📊 BY THE NUMBERS: U.S. measles vaccination rate now at 92.4%, down from 95% in 2019.

🏢 SHRINKING APARTMENTS: New apartments in Pittsburgh shrank by 15% in the past decade, according to data from RentCafe.

💡 WHY IT MATTERS: Renters are paying more money despite having less space.

🔍 ZOOM IN: Average apartment size is now 804 square feet, while monthly rent is $1,499. That’s $498 more than a decade ago, adjusted for inflation, and for apartments that are 142 square feet smaller.

🌎 ZOOM OUT: Pittsburgh is going the opposite direction of other cities, where new apartments saw growth in square footage.

🌈 A LEGEND: A Dolly Parton-inspired corn maze debuts Friday (Aug. 28) at Irons Mill Farmstead (IRONS MILL FARMSTEAD | Fall Festival) in New Wilmington, about an hour north of Pittsburgh near the Lawrence-Mercer County line.

👠 THE BIG PICTURE: It's another way to pay tribute to the "Queen of Country," who died this week at 80. Fans are remembering the star for her one-of-a-kind talent, philanthropy and playful spirit.

🎤 CONTEXT: The attraction is part of a national corn maze initiative supporting Parton's Imagination Library, a literacy program that provides free books to children from birth to age 5. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the program.

🌽 ZOOM IN: The maze is one of 40+ attractions at Irons Mill's fall festival, open select days through Nov. 1.

🌲 FOREST RULE CHANGE: The Trump administration is pushing to eliminate the Roadless Rule in national forests, risking Allegheny National Forest's protections.

🌳 THE BIG PICTURE: 25,000 acres in the Allegheny National Forest, including Hearts Content Scenic Area, would open to development if the rule is eliminated.

🦌 CONTEXT: Allegheny National Forest is Pennsylvania's only national forest, spanning Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties in Northwestern Pennsylvania.

🦎 ZOOM IN: Remote areas in the forest are home to threatened species such as the American goshawk and the state amphibian, the Eastern hellbender salamander.

🗣️ WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Trump agriculture officials said the change would give local Forest Service officials more control over forest health, easing restrictions on wildfire prevention like forest thinning and insect control.

❗ YES, BUT: Road access can increase fire risks by giving humans — who cause most wildfires — easier access to remote areas.
